Taking a trip with your teenage children can be difficult especially if you have no idea how to keep the kids preoccupied throughout your family holiday. Older teens do not find their parents ideal companions during travels and holidays either. They may become restless during the holiday if they have nothing entertaining to do. Teenagers are full of energy that can be released in a number of ways. However, there are various activity holidays for teenagers out there and this post aims to give you some ideas on what you can do to ensure your family has a fantastic holiday.

Sports and Adventure Holidays

Various holiday destinations offer an array of sporting adventures. Active teenagers can indulge in canoeing, quad biking and wild camping. The teenagers can be spoilt for choice with a range of activities such as handball, basketball, tennis, golf, trekking and pony-riding. Some holiday destinations may offer facilities such as games room with pool table, pinball and table football as well as air hockey for indoor entertainment.

You can look up any holiday destination that is an ideal spot for your teenagers to have a great mixture of sport and adventure. The destination can be a great location for outdoor activities such as fishing, whitewater rafting, cycling, kayaking, hiking, swimming, bungee jumping, safaris, paintballing, skiing and mountain biking. Moreover, amusement and theme parks are some attractions for teenagers to enjoy active outdoor activities.

Urban and Cultural Holidays

An urban setting may be appealing to teenagers who are into street culture. Holiday destinations that offer the prospect of cheaper clothes, shoes, sunglasses and entertainment devices may be ideal for such teenagers. There are many things to do during an urban holiday. Teenagers can hangout with their peers and have a great time. A city break can include social activities such as pizza evenings and karaoke nights.

The kids may have a natural curiosity for a city especially if the location is famous for movies, TV shows and video games they like to play. Famous landmarks, bus tours, movie tours may be attractive to them. Other activities that can keep the teenagers busy and out of trouble include shopping, dining, sightseeing and live music nights. They can engage in recreational activities such as painting, photography and learning sessions. A plethora of teen-themed theater entertainment, dance, art exhibitions and film screenings can be ideal.

Teens can also learn the history and culture of the people in a city and surrounding areas by visiting the museums and historical sites. The highlights for cultural holidays can include learning about food, festivals, beliefs and traditions. Teenagers can learn fascinating facts about other people’s way of life that is much different to theirs, which can provide a lifetime of memories.

Beach Holidays

Soaking up the sun while enjoying the cool breeze from the waters can be a relaxing way to spend a holiday. Teenagers who enjoy going to the beach can engage in more water sports such as snorkeling, sailing and diving. Walking along the beaches while enjoying the sand on their feet and collect can also be fun. Wild beaches, beach parties, kite surfing, bonfires, forts, authentic villages and deserts can be fascinating to teenagers who enjoy adventurous beach holidays.

White water rafting around Idaho Springs might just make your teenagers week. To experience the thrill of white water rafting is an adventure with friends. Moreover, amusement and theme parks are some attractions for teenagers to enjoy active outdoor activities.

Traveling by Cloud

I’m old enough to remember when travelling was mostly a massive exercise is personal security. I blame American Express, mainly, and their chillingly effective commercials depicting young honeymooners tearfully calling their parents after her purse had been artfully lifted from the back of a chair in an outdoor café, or befuddled senior citizens asking “what WILL we do?”

So naturally packing meant a solidly uncomfortable and, really, totally impractical money-belt with your traveler’s checks and tickets and passports and reservations and traveling meant stripping down and exposing your valuables whenever you went through security or boarded a train or had to pay for something.

ATM cards and just general experience have eliminated the stranglehold the evil geniuses at American Express held on the imagination and the traveler’s check is, thankfully, a thing of the past. Indeed, unless you’re making off with the proceeds of a jewel heist, there’s no reason to have a money-belt anymore at all. Whatever you might have been tempted to put in one has been replaced by the cloud:

ATMs and the Euro are the new currency traders

I still see those dead-eyed money changers at airports and train stations and I wonder who’s left to prey on. Who can still make it to an international airport with nothing but a wad of cash and no way to access their bank account in local currency? In fact no one, as far as I can tell, and by and large their tellers appear to be reduced to the role of ad-hoc information booth.
So don’t ever change your money. The trick is this; whenever you leave somewhere for a destination that uses a different currency than where you are are, be completely out of money. Take cash out of the ATM in small, safe amounts that you can afford to lose and you’re certain to spend or can donate to the World Wildlife Fund at your departure gate.
Incidentally the currency traders still have a revenue stream in their own ATMs. If it need be said, do not use them. Any ATM is going to charge you to access your own damn money but for the currency traders this is all they’ve got left and they can’t let go of the glory days when they had you at their mercy.

The cloud is the new tearful call home

Before you go, scan or photograph your passports, credit cards (just the front, if you’re concerned about hacking) and all your tickets and reservations and either email them to yourself or, even better, upload them to Google Drive or Microsoft Skydrive where you can access them from any computer with an internet connection (ie, any computer). By all means have printouts of whatever tickets or reservations are more convenient as hard-copies but above all know that nothing bad is going to happen. You can lose pretty much everything and so long as you can get online and to your bank or embassy you can get it all back again in 24 hours. The real objective here is not to travel physically lighter but psychically lighter.

E-Tickets are the new tickets-tickets

Just about all western travel can be done these days without issued reservations. There remain some archaic peculiarities, such as the very German train ticketing system in which a ticket entitles you, in practice, to buy a seat. But even these amusing cultural curiosities can be accommodated online and you can almost always select some variation of print-at-home.
I remember when I first encountered print-at-home tickets and being utterly perplexed: what was to prevent me from printing all the tickets I wanted and inviting my friends for unlimited free travel? Of course, apart from the fact that each ticket has a unique and irreproducible code and a scannable motif — usually a QR code — I just wouldn’t do that and neither would most people. This is the evolution in thinking that facilitated e-tickets — the realization that the comfort and convenience of the vast majority of passengers was a more important objective than catching the few cheats.
Refer above to the cloud. By all means print your tickets but don’t have a regularly-scheduled freak-out when you forget where you put them because it doesn’t matter any more — you can print them again or, as often as not, just show the conductor the confirmation on your phone.
Airline e-ticketing tends be even more convenient these days and self check in should be nominated for some sort of Nobel prize. Typically you arrive at the airport (as usual, way, way earlier than you should need to — security theatre has only gotten worse) and scan your passport through a machine which offers you seat selection and prints out your boarding pass. Self check in is such a sea change from the rote torture that, really, wasn’t that long ago that it can seem a little suspicious at first but it’s actually as simple and convenient as it seems.

Carrying a little less paper isn’t going to make your luggage much lighter but that’s always a secondary objective to enjoying where you are and the time spent getting there. So take a little weight off your mind, put it in the cloud, and it’ll follow you wherever you go.

Avoiding unnecessary costs while travelling

ATM and cash

One aspect of travel that many people overlook is handling their finances whilst travelling. Many people assume that what happens in their home country where finance is concerned will also happen abroad but this is simply not the case. There are a few things that you might want to consider before leaving home, which when handled correctly will help you save money that can be better spent on enjoying your travels.

Withdrawal fees

When abroad you may find that you incur charges either from your bank or the ATM/cash machine you use whilst abroad. There are a few things that you can do to reduce costs like these. First of all do a little research into cards that don’t charge you to withdraw money abroad. The ATM may still charge you but this will help. In terms of ATM charges, often you won’t be able avoid these but by withdrawing large amounts in one go rather than visiting the ATM several times for small amounts will help you to reduce the charges you incur.

Exchange rates

Many people make the classic mistake of accepting the first exchange rate they are offered and most people don’t realise that getting their foreign currency in the airport will get them the worst deal around. If you want to save money when buying foreign currency then it’s worth doing your research to find the best deals around. Sometimes this will mean ordering your foreign currency in advance so you might need to plan ahead but the extra planning can mean extra money for your holiday fund.

Sending money abroad

Running out of money on the road can happen to the best of us. Having money sent from home to wherever you are can be more costly than you might imagine but it doesn’t need to be. There are many ways that you can transfer funds internationally that will allow you to withdraw money abroad. Setting up an international money transfer is a quick and easy way to ensure that you don’t have to pay fees to access your own money whilst travelling.

Sometimes the costs involved in spending money abroad can feel unexpected and therefore unplanned for, however with a little research and planning, many of this costs can be avoided or greatly reduced.

Have a Christmas with a difference with a winter getaway

As the temperatures drop, some of us just want to curl up indoors – but others dream of escaping to sunnier climes. While Christmas is traditionally a time to spend at home with the family, the usual routine can become a bit tiresome, so why not go abroad this year and see how the holidays are celebrated in another country? You can still bring the whole family, and with operators like Teletext Holidays it’s easy to find good deals even if you’re booking late.

The economic troubles may be putting a strain on people’s finances, but the good news is that travel companies are cutting their prices to offer competitive deals to their customers. With more people turning towards “staycations” – that is, holidaying somewhere in the UK – to save money, travel firms have more incentive than ever to try to tempt people to go abroad, so it’s well worth taking a look at some of the last-minute offers out there.

The 2012 Travel Trends Survey from TripAdvisor revealed that while the economy remains a “significant concern” for Brits, it’s not dissuading them from taking a well-earned rest: two-thirds said they plan to take between two and four leisure trips this year, with average budgets for these breaks ranging between £2,000 and £4,000.

If you’re seeking a bit of winter sun, have a look at holidays around the Med – the Canary Islands, for instance, are a popular destination for topping up your tan without emptying your wallet. Places like Tenerife, La Palma and Lanzarote really come alive around the holiday season – temperatures average around 19°C in the Canaries in December and January with around seven hours of sunshine a day, so it’s the perfect place to spend Christmas on the beach!

Feeling a bit more adventurous? Why not really turn your world upside down and see how they celebrate Christmas in Australia? The Australian summer begins in December, so don’t expect any snow and log fires – in fact, the traditional Australian Christmas is celebrated with a barbecue in the back yard or a picnic on the beach. Seafood, salads, cold turkey and ham are the usual festive fare, although you may still see a few Santas sweltering in the heat!

Wherever you decide to go on your Christmas getaway, you’ll be guaranteed an adventure and a story to tell when you get home.

The Importance of Travel Insurance

You’ve spent countless hours researching the perfect destination for your big holiday. You have taken every precaution to acquire and pack everything you may need, from common over the counter remedies for ailments you may across while on holiday to every type of garment you may possibly need. You arrange for transportation, arrive at the airport early, and set out on your marvellous holiday. So what’s wrong with this scenario? You’ve forgotten the most important thing needed in any holiday: travel insurance.

Many travellers roll their eyes or let out a sigh at the mention of it. As mentioned above, you’ve been exceedingly careful in planning and executing every bit of your holiday. What on earth could you need travel insurance for? For the unexpected! Because no one ever expects to be left with no luggage on a tropical island, or to be forced to pay full price for a pre-booked holiday that was cancelled at the last minute by the travel company who now gets to keep your hard-earned money because you didn’t read every line of the booking agreement you signed. Or worse, to find yourself injured and in need of medical care in a foreign place that wants to charge you thousands of pounds just to provide with medically necessary treatment. If these are not scenarios you want to face on your next holiday then keep reading.

Holiday insurance isn’t a big block of unnecessary protection on things you care nothing about. Contrary to popular belief, travel insurance can be altered to fit your exact needs. You can chose specific amounts for your baggage, health, and cancellation insurance to fit your budget and keep you perfectly protected. This way, if your luggage is lost, you need medical treatment, or have to cancel your trip at any time for any reason, you are protected from potentially thousands of pounds lost or spent in bills.

On your next holiday, be sure not to forget the most important step in your travel planning to ensure you enjoy your holiday with the peace of mind that comes with being protected.

Don’t take the risk with travel vaccinations

Travel vaccinations should not be viewed as a simple precaution, they should be looked at as vital protection for anyone travelling abroad. According to the NHS, one in four British travellers heading to parts of the world known for being home to infectious disease travels without having had vaccinations.

Some people assume that because they are not particularly prone to getting ill at home, they will more than likely be OK abroad. But places in Asia and Africa expose you to diseases you will not have had to deal with in the UK, and if the body is not prepared, you can fall ill quite easily. Having perhaps saved for months to be able to afford that dream holiday, it’s not worth risking having it spoiled by illness, which could then mean having to meet hefty medical bills or even pay for repatriation.

The first thing to consider is what type of vaccinations you will likely need. This handy interactive NHS guide allows you to isolate your destination(s) and find out what diseases you may be at risk of if you travel there. For example, if you select ‘Thailand’ it recommends looking into vaccinations for typhoid, diphtheria, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis B and cholera, as well as giving some brief information on each disease.

Another reason not to overlook vaccinations is the fact that many of them are available for free! Speak to your GP about what vaccinations are available to you on the NHS, but you can get an idea from this section of the health service’s website. Some immunisations will have to be paid for privately but don’t let this put you off; most are available from high-street chemists such as Lloyds pharmacy and are not expensive – especially when compared to the potential cost of getting treatment for the disease abroad.

Obviously, doing research about the vaccinations you’ll need and having them done can take a little time, so don’t wait until the last minute. Travel vaccinations should be part of your holiday preparations every time you go away, and bear in mind that some treatments must be taken over the course of a few weeks, or you might need a period of watching for adverse reactions to these shots before you travel anywhere.

Holiday Deal Dilemmas: Self Catering to All Inclusive Holiday Deals

What’s the best board for you? It’s the decision that every holidaymaker has to make, and choosing which package fits your needs can be difficult. Holiday deals cover a diverse range of breaks, from self catering getaways to all inclusive holiday deals on luxury escapes.

The type of board you choose is dependent on the style of holiday you want to enjoy. Singles and couples looking to explore their destination and make the most of excursions and eateries may find that all inclusive can drain much of their budget designated for spending money.

In this case, a self catering, room only or half board option would be an ideal choice. It will give you the freedom to discover your destination, at the lowest package price available.

Getting out and exploring isn’t everyone’s idea of a relaxing stint overseas. Many travellers prefer to simply kick back and relax with a holiday read, bathe in the beautiful sunshine, make the most of the sandy shores, and indulge in a selection of scrumptious foods.

If this sounds like your ideal escape, the all inclusive holiday deals could well save you a small fortune off the total cost of your holiday. Ensuring that all meals, drinks and entertainment are covered, all inclusive guarantees that your need for spends is kept to a minimum.

Parents travelling with children from tots to teens will also find all inclusive stays beneficial. With kids clubs, mini discos and unlimited ice-creams on offer, all inclusive offers something for everyone in the family.

Regardless of your intended holiday style, be sure to watch out for bargain deals on all inclusive breaks. Prices often drop so low, you’d be a fool not to make the most of a luxury break in the sun.

Winter 2012/13 and summer 2013 holidays are online now. Book your break as soon as possible to get the best price on the widest choice of holiday packages.

Five Items You Should Take With You When You Travel

Most people find packing a bit of a nightmare, the fear is that you’ll take too little and inevitably you end up taking too much. In the stress and confusion that accompanies the packing ritual people often end forgetting the basics or the essentials. This post is to help remind you what five key items are essential on your travels wherever they may take you. These items are more necessary for the journey itself because you are almost always guaranteed to be able to find the things you need for your holiday on your holiday.

GPS system or map

The last thing you want or need is to take a wrong turn while on the road particularly at night. Having a GPS system whether it’s a fancy device or simply part of your smart phone can help you to stay on track on your journey. If you aren’t travelling by car then it’s equally important to make sure you have a map of the place you are visiting, even if it’s simply one you printed off the Internet. When traveling to foreign countries you never know what might happen, flights could be delayed and connections missed meaning you could arrive at your destination in the dead of night and have to navigate your way around an unfamiliar city.

A back up cell phone

Having a spare phone or at the least a spare battery can stop you being stranded without means of communication. These days smart phones are capable of getting us online, directing us to places and so much more but the downside is that the battery life is often much shorter than older phones. With two phones fully charged, you need never worry about your battery dying on you.

Money

This is an obvious one but making sure you have enough money on your travels is essential. It’s sensible to keep a secret stash of money on your person somewhere that is separate to your wallet, purse or handbag. That way if you are robbed or you lose your purse, you’ll have enough in reserve to tide you over until you can get help from your bank.

Audio books

Audio books are the perfect form of entertainment for travel because they don’t take up additional space in your luggage like books do and you won’t need to worry about poor lighting on planes and buses because rather then read you can simply sit back and listen.

Copies of your important documents

It’s not enough to have your important documents with you when you travel. Make sure you take scans of all of your documents such as your passport, drivers license, vaccinations certificates and then carry copies with you but also email the scans to your own email account or a friends so that you can access your detail in case of loss or theft. Also at some border crossings you are required to provide photocopies of your passport.

Tissues or wet wipes

Many people think of babies when they see wet wipes but these are a lifesaver when it comes to travel essentials. Perfect for spilt food on the plane, sanitisation after using toilets, freshening up after a snooze in transit and so much more.

Carry these five essential items in your hand luggage and you’ll find your travels are much smoother and more comfortable for you.

How to Best Prepare for a Move Abroad: a Checklist

Sometimes, traveling abroad for a brief vacation just isn’t enough: more and more people want to make their dream of living in another country come true. Students who’ve just graduated from high school or college opt to go on a gap year – slightly older employees take a sabbatical and consider going abroad to work in Canada or Australia on a working holiday visa – middle-aged couples put their savings together to open a B&B in Ireland – retirees want to spend their golden years under the sun of Tuscany or Thailand… In short, the possibilities are endless, no matter your age and current situation in life. However, unless you are the adventurous type, you probably shouldn’t hop on the next plane with your carry-on luggage. Preparing to move abroad – whether it’s for ten months or ten years – requires a bit of “homework” to do before you leave. The following checklist may come in handy:

  • Do you have a valid passport? If it’s about to expire or will become invalid while you are abroad, you should renew it before your trip. Otherwise, you’ll have to spend some time at a consulate during your precious time abroad, or you may run into trouble at the border when you want to go back home.
  • What do you know about your destination’s visa and residence requirements? Now’s the time to get in touch with the nearest embassy or consulate and make enquiries about your specific case. Depending on the country, your own nationality, your reason for moving, and the planned duration of your stay, you may have quite a bit of red tape to cut through. Particularly if you’d like to go abroad for work, sorting out your application for a visa-plus-work-permit can take a while. Make sure that you start your preparations well in advance of your departure date. Three months is a good rule of thumb: this might seem like a long time, but if the embassy staff is known for taking their time or if you have a lot of additional documents to submit, you will definitely need it.
  • Also, if you are planning to run your own business abroad or being self-employed, make sure you know the legal regulations. It’s probably best to have a reliable local partner or advisor to help you with administrative matters.
  • Once you’ve submitted a complete visa application and have a better timeframe to work with, you can start looking into travel tickets and temporary accommodation. The latter depends a lot on your personal budget. Backpackers on work & travel visa make do with hostels; expats with lower-income jobs are often interested in renting a room in a shared flat, and expatriate families with a generous salary and/or housing allowance will feel most comfortable in a hotel suite or serviced apartment.
  • Are you in good health and fit for travel? While you’re still at home, find the time for a comprehensive check-up exam with your family doctor. If you need some minor surgery, dental fillings, or a new pair of glasses, take care of it before going abroad. Moreover, you should read up on your destination: do you need any special immunizations? Are there any health risks you should know about? What are the medical standards like? Can you just import your usual prescription drugs? And, most importantly, do you have any travel or medical insurance to pay for emergency treatment and regular care? You wouldn’t want to be settled with a major hospital bill because you suffer, say, from acute appendicitis during your gap year in France!
  • Indeed, money makes the world go round – so make sure you have some money around the world! You should check how long your credit card is valid, if your cards will be accepted by standard ATMs abroad and if you can access a bank account with some emergency funds. Even if you don’t have to submit proof of sufficient funds for a visa application, lay aside some money that might pay for a few nights at a hostel and a flight home. There’ve been plenty of clueless backpackers who had to spend some days sleeping on park benches and living off half-price bread because they ran out of funds and had to wait for their family to wire them “back-up money”. Okay, if you’re twenty and it’s summer, this is kind of fun, but at a certain age, you probably just want a decent bed and a hot meal instead.
  • Especially if you are older and/or if you earn a full salary, you should also talk to your financial service provider and your tax advisor. Your move abroad can affect your income taxes, tax returns, as well as your retirement provisions. If you have never heard of things like “fiscal residence” or “social security agreement” before, you’ll have to dig into those topics now.
  • Finally, the date of departure is drawing nearer and nearer… Unless you are planning to travel light, it may be time to do a property inventory and think about what you’d like to take or ship abroad. Particularly if you are in for a long-term move, you shouldn’t skip this step: most expats want some family heirlooms or prized possessions to accompany them abroad.
  • In case you intend to take bulky items like household appliances or even your car, it’s worth checking import regulations and technical standards. If your fridge from the US doesn’t even fit into a standard-size kitchen in Japan or if your car needs a major overhaul for the UAE, it’s probably easier to buy or lease the same things abroad.
  • Last but not least, you may have to cancel your subscriptions before you leave. You certainly don’t want to keep paying for phone, Internet, electricity, gas, and the local paper while you’re busy dashing round the world. If you want to get your mail forwarded, take care of it too.

Phew, that was quite a bit of work, wasn’t it? However, all the time you invest beforehand really pays off once you move abroad. When you’re actually overseas, you can simply relax and focus fully on your experiences, the new life you are building, the interesting sights you visit and the great people you meet – no reason to worry about things left undone.
