While I agree that being physically fit is good, I don’t think it’s everything. You will be just fine if you are overweight in most of the touristy citys in Europe and America (you’ll even fit in as a fat American!) If you are looking to go on more of a strenuous type of trip then yes, you need to be in shape.
I backpacked around Europe in college and I was severely overweight and it was really tough.
