Paris is one of those cities that I could return to again, and again, and again. The initial sightseeing buzz is fairly overwhelming – climbing the Eiffel Tower, admiring Notre Dame, and strolling down the Champs-Elysées – it is like all of your postcard holiday dreams come true. As you get to know the city a bit better, it is a place that is easy to fall in love with – not only the history and the culture, not only the great food, the great shopping, and the fantastic people watching. I love the lifestyle that Paris seems to offer – quirky neighbourhoods, local shops, and being able to cycle everywhere (except around the Arc de Triomphe – that’s a mistake you only make once). One thing about Paris that takes a bit of local knowledge is where to go for a picnic. Parc des Buttes-Chaumont This is a large public park in the northeast of the city – the 19th arrondissement. On top of a hill, the park has spectacular views out across Paris. With large grassy areas, this is a popular weekend destination for locals who come and sit with families and friends, enjoying the views and the fresh air. Another attraction of the park is the Rosa Bonheur bar. On Sunday afternoons (from about 4PM), they slowly begin to turn up the music and the bar is soon a pumping party that attracts the young and the cool of Paris – it happens every Sunday and it’s great fun. Jardin du Luxembourg A stunning city park, the Jardin du Luxembourg is in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. Huge expanses of lawn surround a central lake and a fantastic array of statues and sculptures. There is an incredible sense of timeless serenity as you watch children sailing model boats on the lake. There are plenty of good bakeries nearby too so you can cycle to the gardens, drop off your hire bike, stock up on bread and cheese and you are good to go. Bassin de la Villette This is a large artificial lake, located in the 19th arrondissement of the city. With ample grassed areas, this seems to be a popular spot for students and groups of young friends, hanging out, playing games, eating and drinking. Paris is a city that I can happily return to again and again. Being within easy reach of London makes it even more appealing – to be able to jump on Rail Europe’s pre-booked Eurostar train after work on a Friday night and have the whole weekend in a city that seems like a world away is absolute bliss. Even if you are not into picnics, whether it is your first visit, your fifth visit, or your twenty-fifth visit, you will always find something to delight and excite you in Paris.

Oklahoma City National Memorial

This museum was built as a memorial to the people who lost their lives in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. The tour will take you through the events of that day, and the aftermath. While this might not be the most light-hearted tourist activity, it is certainly one that will leave you with profound effects.

Bricktown, Dowtown Oklahoma

If you are looking for a lively area that will give you a taste of what Oklahoma City has to offer, Bricktown is a must-visit. Here you will find all sorts of attractions, great food and loads of fun. Oklahoma City Zoo

What if a pipe bursts, heavy rains hit, or a tap suddenly gives way? Locking up is smart, but actually shutting down your home can prevent serious property damage. Shut down your home by:

• Turning all the gas sources off
• Shutting down the main water supply
• Fortifying the basement against heavy rains
• Making sure your drainage systems are functional

There is a flipside to shutting down. Some things  you may want to leave on. For instance:

• You may want to leave your lights on for periodic use (see securing a lookout below)
• You may want to leave your land line active with a message that states “Stepped out for a bit, be back shortly, etc.”
• If you have a weekly lawn care visit, you may want to keep it

3: Securing a Lookout

Unless you live in a secluded location, trusted neighbors can be a big help while you’re away. Having one trusted neighbor tasked with keeping an eye on the home allows your home to appear occupied to those looking for abandoned houses. It also puts someone in and around the home in case it starts to flood, a fire starts, or some other unfortunate circumstance arises. A lookout can help you in numerous ways, including:

• Turning your lights on periodically to ensure a lived-in look
• Checking  your pipes and drainage systems
• Making sure no one has attempted to break in
• Storing some of your more valuable pieces
• Handling any visitors to the home

A lookout gives you extra peace of mind and guards against any smaller problems becoming much larger problems over time.

4: Removing “Secret” Entry Points

Hiding a spare key under that fake rock, the door mat or under some leaves is really dangerous at any time, particularly while you’re away for extended periods. Likewise with having a back door lock that you can shimmy open in a pinch. These might stand as secret conveniences to you, but they’re no safeguard against someone who wants to break in.

Make sure you take security seriously and remove and fix these “secret” entry points that so many homeowners have.

5: Delaying Your Mail

When your mail stacks up, it doesn’t matter that your phone is still active or that your lights come on periodically. Anyone on the lookout for empty houses will take that as a sign that your home is ripe for the picking. If you don’t have a neighbor coming over to collect your mail, make sure you cancel it for the length of your vacation, have it sent to a P.O. box, or some other solution.

Also, have any papers cancelled and don’t order any packages that may arrive while you’re away.

Securing your home is a matter of great importance, even if your trip is on the short side. You never know when a pipe will malfunction, when a flood or fire will occur, or when that friendly neighborhood cat burglar is on the prowl. The more steps you take to guard against damage and break-ins, the safer you’ll be.

In the days of belt-tightening, economic problems, money issues…everyone just wants to be able to enjoy themselves without having to spend the cash that is often necessary to do so. Unfortunately, when it comes to booking holidays, there are only so many times you can go to Cornwall on the cheap – we’re restless, wandering beings that have a deep-rooted need to explore and see new things as much as we can, and another week in Penzance won’t cut it for very long.

A decent budget for a week or so away is about £500 once flights and accommodation have been taken into account, but just how far you can get depends on the kind of deals you can dig up from different travel agents and operators. Even Africa (the touristy bits) is generally going to be out-of-bounds, and you can forget about the Far East as well – the flights cost a lot more than the dirt-cheap accommodation does.

That more or less leaves you with Europe, but don’t be disheartened. There are loads of destinations around the continent that take you off the beaten track to experience things you never have before, and we’re going to tell you about five of them.

Reykjavik, Iceland

One of the smallest capital cities in Europe, you’ll never miss out on anything that’s going on because it’s probably happening around the corner. It’s hip, it’s safe and it’s unlike anywhere you’ll have been before – visit the stunning Hallgrimskirkja church and the statue of Icelandic explorer Leif Eriksson and dive between two tectonic plates at the Thingvellir National Park, a half-hour drive outside the city. Just take it easy when buying alcohol in bars and clubs: beer was banned in Iceland until 1989 and is still quite expensive, which is why many people drink cheaply at home before going out.

Bled, Slovenia

Slovenia as a whole is one of the most underrated countries in Europe in terms of its natural beauty and, for a relaxing summer holiday, you could do far worse than visit Lake Bled. Visitors can swim in the lake or row to the island in its centre, as well as exploring the town of Bled and Bled Castle, a medieval structure that overlooks the lake. Don’t forget to try the local speciality, kremna rezina – it’s a puff pastry filled with custard cream and topped with powdered sugar, and it’s divine.

Though it doesn’t have the obvious appeal of cities like Rome, Florence, Naples or Venice, Bologna is certainly worth a visit for the discerning traveller who appreciates its architecture and history. For instance, it’s the home of the oldest university in the Western world (founded in 1088), boasting alumni that include Dante Alighieri, Nicolaus Copernicus, Petrarch and Thomas Becket. You can also visit the Asinelli and Garisenda Towers, structures whose height made them key parts of the city’s defence. And the cuisine’s impeccable, but it’s Italy – so you knew that already. 

Kalabaka, Greece

You might have never heard of Kalabaka – it’s only a small town in the middle of Greece, after all – but you might well have heard of Meteora, the set of “floating” Orthodox monasteries that loom over the town on pillars of sandstone rock. Six monasteries (now uninhabited) remain and tourists flock from all over Europe to climb to them via steps cut into the cliff. Although Kalabaka won’t keep you entertained for much more than a long weekend (there is a twelfth-century cathedral in the town itself, and there are excursions outside the town available to occupy you), it’ll certainly keep you below your budget.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Scandinavia is still a bit of an untapped tourist destination as far as visitors outside Europe are concerned, but cities like Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, are rife with culture and things to do. Architecturally, Copenhagen is one of the most eclectic cities, with stunning examples of medieval and modern buildings throughout its various districts, and its long association with beer (as the home of Carlsberg and a rising number of microbreweries) will always ensure that booze connoisseurs will be well-catered for. With the two oldest amusement parks in the world also in operation within the city, children are catered for as well.
