Music festivals outside London

England spawned the Brit invasion of the 1980s then the 2000s, and London has gained a name for having chart-toppers perform in gigs around the city almost every night, with so many venues in the capital to choose from. However, when next summer rolls along, the locals will be donning their hats and sunscreen to camp out over successive weekends at musical festivals outside London.

Reading Festival

Held in conjunction with the Leeds Festival every year, the Reading Festival is the world’s oldest popular music festival still on-going, evolving over the years through several musical phases. As part of the twin-site event with sister festival Leeds, it has attracted the top acts in rock, alternative, indie, punk and metal year-on-year. It’s no wonder then that the Reading Festival Tickets are being sold a year in advance, with early birds standing to gain massive discounts for tickets to next year’s festival on the 20th and 22nd of August.

The Great Escape

This festival is a great proponent of quantity, with over 400 bands – from the UK and international – set to perform in 35 venues around Brighton. It is held at a time when locals flock to the seaside town in the summer heat, from 8th to 10th May 2014. The yearly international partner picked for 2014 is Finland, which will be bringing its local talent to perform at The Great Escape. A business music convention will run concurrently so music professionals can network amid a party atmosphere.

Wychwood  Festival

Held yearly at the Cheltenham Racecourse in Gloucestershire, Wychwoodis a family festival, made intimate for both audiences and musicians. It draws new collaboration and acts in the world, roots and contemporary music genres. It boasts four music stages with over 100 bands, plus comedy acts and over 100 workshops and events for all ages. Supporting events including kids literature festival, healing and sculpture gardens, as well as The Headphone Disco opening until the wee hours with great food and real ales.

Download Festival

Rock connoisseurs annually congregate at the Download Festival, a three-day extravaganza of heavy rock music at Donington Park, the spiritual home of rock. Next year’s Download is set to feature around 150 acts over five stages in the weekend of Friday 13th to Sunday 15th June 2014.

Confirmed performers for next year include Avenged Sevenfold headlining on Friday night, and Rob Zombie playing the Main Stage. Poland: steeped in rich history

For a country that has constantly been caught between superpowers and receiving the brunt of damages in World Wars, Poland has bounced back remarkably to draw tourists yearly.

Its capital, Warsaw, plays host to many historical monuments whilst embracing new cultures and art performances at the very same landmarks. To see this strange complementary nature of Warsaw, you can get cheap flights to Poland using Cleartrip Coupons.

Warsaw’s Old Town (Creative Commons)

Warsaw’s Old Town (Creative Commons)

Old Town or Stare Miasto

As the cultural heartbeat of Warsaw, Old Town’s quiet idyllic streets help one rest from the hustle and bustle of city life. Founded in the 13th century as the prince’s castle, 90% of Old Town’s walls were destroyed in World War II. Since then, a great part of the walls were recovered, and the town made UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1980.

Its alleys, squares and cafes offer visitors a cosy feel around the old quarter of historical buildings. However, don’t be fooled as these same places come alive in the summer, setting the stage for musicals, theatrical performances and open-air galleries.

Wilanów Palace

This palace is s testament to the longevity of the Polish Baroque style, and also of Warsaw’s ability to match so many different cultures and styles together. It was built at the end of the 17th century, growing larger as successive owners took charge and put their individual stamps on it. The palace seamlessly combines the architecture of a traditional Polish court with that of an Italian rural villa and a French chateau. Its interiors span three style eras – Baroque in the royal apartments, 18th century in the South wing and 19th century north wing rooms.

As a museum, it exhibits the Polish Portrait Gallery of Works from the 16th-19th centuries, with portraits of kings, great nobles, distinguished Poles and cultural names. It also displays characteristic Polish coffin portraits and Sarmatian Counterfeit. Again, its garden amalgamates several park styles: Baroque, English-Chinese, English landscape, and neo-Renaissance garden; its eastern grounds are surrounded by a lake and a water feature. Sculptures, fountains and miniature architectural works are dotted throughout the garden.

Warsaw Rising Museum

The museum is testament to Poles’ resilience in the face of continued adversity in World War II, a tribute to those who fought and died for a free Poland. The jarring exhibit tracks life before and during the Warsaw Uprising, occupation, post-war communism and the fate of insurgents in the People’s Republic of Poland, using real images and sounds. It also plays 3D movie ‘The City of Ruins’, which simulates Liberator planes flying over a bombarded Warsaw in 1945.

Spanning over 3,000 meters, there are nearly 1,000 exhibits and 1,500 photographs and films in the Museum, and the sound of a heartbeat from within its walls symbolises Warsaw life in 1944. From the tower, there is a beautiful view of the Freedom Park with Memorial Wall, where more than 10,000 dead insurgents’ names are printed.

How to get from A to B

Chicken Bus, Costa Rica by Arturo Sotillo (Creative Commons)

Chicken Bus, Costa Rica by Arturo Sotillo (Creative Commons)

Exploring a new destination involves the need for two things – a good public transport network and a bit of nerve. Whilst most popular tourist resorts will be easy to get around, thanks to the whole place being geared up for foreign visitors, some destinations are off the beaten track, and those are the places that beg to be explored.

One of the biggest challenges when you first arrive in your chosen country is getting from the airport to resort. If you’ve booked through a large holiday company, such as a package break through Thomas Cook or Thomson, for example, then you’re likely to be met at the airport door by a rep, and taken to a large coach, which will whisk you to your hotel. Of course the downside of this is that many others will also be going through the same process, and the coach will probably take a while to get to your particular hotel.

I often book my holiday parts separately; I don’t tend to go down the package holiday route, and this means I book my transfer separately too. If you go for this option, be sure to choose a reputable company, I always book mine through Travel Republic, and I’ve never run into problems. A smaller shuttle bus means less stops, and that of course means you get to your hotel quicker!

Once you’re in your resort and you’ve sampled the local delights a little, I’d highly recommend putting on your exploration head. I recently jumped on the local bus on a visit to Marmaris, and went to the regional city of Mugla. Whilst we had no idea where we were going, it was easy by asking a few questions, remembering lots of pleases and thank you’s and being a bit brave! It was a great day out and no matter where you are, it’s always worth heading off and seeing what’s out and about. However, always remember to stay safe, and never venture off alone, or without telling anyone where you’re going. It’s all common sense really.

Travelling around is always the most stressful part of any holiday, but I always find the UK side of it more stressful than anything! Getting to the airport is full of pitfalls and can often be costly if you’re having to factor in taxis and public transport. Airport parking really is a godsend for anyone wanting to cut down on cost and stress. I regularly use BCP for parking at Heathrow, and I’ve never found reason to complain! This service offers many perks, and if you’re travelling with children, it certainly lowers stress levels and offers comfort. No matter where you fly from, you’ll find a service to suit. There are fantastic facilities for Manchester Airport parking, and most other regional airports too, so certainly check out what’s available near you.

Getting out and about is a must, not just an option – be brave, be safe, and go explore!

How to Have the Best Holiday of your life in Greece!

The city of Athens, Greece by Jay Galvin (Creative Commons)

The city of Athens, Greece by Jay Galvin (Creative Commons)

Greece has been one of the most popular travel destinations for years, and for good reason.  If you are planning to visit this wonderful country, you will not be disappointed as it is one of those few places in the world that has a lot to offer on more than one front. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover or you simply want to go and chill out and sip a few cocktails on a picturesque beach, Greece can offer you all that and more, not to mention the exquisite local cuisine!

Your flight will most probably land in the historical capital of Athens.  Start by visiting the Acropolis rock, where the Parthenon stands magnificent still to this day.  This grand structure was built in the 5th century BC and stood the test of time after numerous earthquakes that hit the region along the years, a real feat of ancient engineering. The Ancient Agora, the ancient’s political and commercial centre, a stroll down from the acropolis is also worth a visit.

The Delphi, believed to be the centre of mother earth by the ancient Greeks should be your next stop.  This place is a magnificent example of ancient Greek life comprising of beautiful temples, an amphitheatre and a wonderful archeological museum.

Move a bit further out and fast forward history to check out the monasteries, the one on ‘Holy Mountain’ or Mount Athos, and the Meteora being the most famous. These are literally suspended buildings the eastern orthodox monks built way up high to be as close to God as possible, accessible in the past only by rope ladders.   Don’t worry, as you won’t have to risk your life at all to visit these fascinating structures.

You cannot go to Greece without visiting some of the beautiful islands surrounding the mainland.  Greece has a really great network of ferries that connect most of the islands together.  You might want to go to the beautiful island of Santorini, the island of Crete or perhaps visit the beautiful town on the island of Mykonos with its little white houses and idyllic beaches.  Make sure to check out the luxury that the Mykonos Villas have to offer and spend the day in Little Venice or party the night away if you’re up for a bit of nighttime fun.

Before you leave make sure to pay a visit to Peloponissos, an immense landscape of mountains, caves and volcanoes and take a boat to the Diros caves, part of an underground river.  Being surrounded by water Greece has a lot to offer in terms of watersports.  A sailor’s paradise, you can easily plan a week or two to sail from the mainland and go around the islands and maybe do a bit of diving, a real treat.

The Greek are a friendly nation and are generally helpful and nice to tourists and travellers although they do drive their cars in a bit of a crazy way so be careful if you decide to rent a car and go around this way.  Have a nice trip and make sure to drink a lot of water and keep yourself hydrated if you go there in summer, it can get pretty hot!!

Explore Finland: One of Western Europe’s Least Travelled Countries

Often overlooked in favour of its more accessible neighbours, Finland has become one of the least touristy countries in Western Europe. Travellers who dismiss Finland as an empty cold and dark wilderness are missing out. It is in fact one of the most unique and interesting regions in Europe.

There are few other places in the world where summer provides near 24-hour sunshine and winter brings with it almost total darkness. Along with this, Finland’s isolated location means that it retains its wild, natural beauty that includes wide, deep lakes and miles of forests. Alternatively its capital Helsinki will surprise visitors with its ability to provide a truly unique city break.

Helsinki

Finland’s capital is cool and modern city that has a creative, independent vibe that makes it distinct from any other European city. As well as this, its location right on the coast means that it benefits from the clean, fresh sea air, plus tourists can watch as large ferries dominate the skyline when they make their way to the city’s harbour. By European standards Helsinki is not a very old city and it has little architecture dating back before the early 20th Century. This doesn’t mean the city is without character, as it has numerous elegant Art Nouveau and striking Art Deco buildings.

In summer Helsinki comes alive, with its green spaces and parks packed full of residents and visitors. The city barely sleeps and its 20-hours of sunshine a day means it becomes an outdoor lover’s dream location. In winter the city is at the other extreme with only six hours of sunshine, the temperature drops to well below freezing and its streets become almost deserted.

If you are visiting in winter then there are many museums and art galleries where you can discover Finland’s rich history and creativity. Once you’re all cultured out you can head to one of the city’s many cafes, some of which retain the same décor and menu from when they first opened in the 1930s, while others offer a modern and trendy alternative.

The Lakeland

A great place to visit in summer, Finland’s Lakeland region is full of lakes, rivers, locks and canals. Its remote location means that there are miles of unspoilt nature to enjoy and stunning scenery that will stay in your memory forever. There are lots of activities to enjoy in this part of the country; those who enjoy hiking will love exploring its forest trails and hills, while those seeking a bit more excitement can have a go at white water rafting or head off mountain biking.

This region also has a lot to offer in the winter months, with skiing being a big attraction. If you’re looking for more offbeat activities try dog-sledding, snowmobiling, ice-fishing and cross-country skiing.

Lapland

One of the most famous parts of Finland is Lapland. Stretching far into the north of the country and hundreds of miles above the Arctic Circle, Lapland is a wilderness that enjoys an extremely brief summer and a very long, cold winter. This beautiful and isolated region is one of the few places in the world where visitors can see the Northern Lights in their full glory, plus it offers unique experiences such as watching reindeer races across frozen lakes.

Getting there: You can either fly directly into Helsinki airport or travel by ferry into the city. From there you can either get a connecting flight or travel by train to other parts of the country.

The downside of paradise

Planes on runway

Seven, eight, nine, even twenty-odd hours on a plane? Oh no, thank you!

Long haul flying is never fun, and even though where you’re heading should be enough to get you through, it’s the mid-point that really tests your metal. ‘Why didn’t I book Spain?’ You’ll ask yourself! However, once you land and you get over the bit of jet-lag that is inevitable, you’ll forget the flight and will be too busy enjoying the sun in your far-flung resort.

If you get enough rest before you fly, you’ll give yourself a bit of a head start, and your mid-point ‘why am I doing this?’ trauma won’t last quite as long. I’ve stayed at many of the hotels near Gatwick Airport, and this idea as a whole is a fantastic suggestion for resting up before any travel plans. This is even more important with long-haul flying, even from a health point of view, and also has the huge advantage of adding a bit of extra time to your holiday. When is that ever a bad thing?

I travel regionally quite a lot, and my nearest airport is Luton. Where there are many great value fares to be found. If like you’re like me, check out the Luton Airport hotels from Holiday Extras , and check out the great range on offer, at budget-budgeting prices. Your mid-flight questioning will thank you for it! Once you arrive at your destination, acclimatise yourself with the time as quickly as possible, as this will starve off the effects of jet-lag and leave you free to enjoy the place it’s taken you so long to get to! Make sure you sleep at the time you would if you lived there, and eat at the time you would if you lived there – in short, you need to pretend you live in this paradise place! Your body will quickly realise which time zone it’s in and even though you may feel a little groggy, it will at least be manageable.

Whilst you’re stuck on the plane, wishing you could get to your destination a bit quicker, you’ll be thankful if you managed to plan some activities beforehand. Download some books onto your Kindle, a few games to play, buy some magazines, watch some films, do whatever you need to do to occupy your mind. A definite tip is not to watch the on-screen map! I once did this all the way to Orlando, and I’ve never known time go so slow! You know the saying, a watched kettle never boils? In this case, it’s true!

At the end of the day, your flight might be tough, but remember this – you’re going somewhere amazing, and every second spent on the plane is a second closer to your own personal paradise.

How to Enjoy London on a Budget

London by cybaea via Flickr (Creative Commons)

London by cybaea via Flickr (Creative Commons)

London is a great city to visit. Where else can you spend the morning hunting for goods at Camden Market and then rub shoulders with the well-heeled taking afternoon tea at The Ritz? It has thousands of years of history, but also a modern, thriving art scene. There is only one drawback to London; it’s expensive. Regularly making the list of the top ten most expensive cities in the world, it is guaranteed a trip to London is going to cost you.

Although there are no ways of getting around the fact that this is a pricey capital, most travellers would agree it’s worth the price. The good news is that there are some ways of making your money go further. So if you’re planning on visiting London soon here are some budget-friendly tips that will help both you, and your wallet, enjoy your trip:

Free admission

Before leaving home it is a good idea to research which museums and galleries are free to enter. In London you’ll find that many of the top attractions are free so ensure that these are at the top of your to see list. If you’re a student bring along some evidence of the fact, as this will sometimes help you to get cheaper ticket prices for those attractions you do have to pay for. It is also a good idea to research London’s top attractions before you go, usually by doing this you will be able to read other’s recommendations about which are worth the entrance fee and those that should be avoided.

Local transport

When you’re in London instead of depending on expensive taxis, use the public transport to get around. The London Underground is a quick, safe and convenient way of travelling and all major tourist sites have stations close by. You can look at buying tickets for the Underground using websites like Direct Rail, before you leave so you know roughly how much it will cost you. Alternatively, consider taking part in London’s cycle hire programme. This scheme allows locals and tourists to rent bikes which can be left when finished with at any docking stations located around the capital. Not only is it a cost effective way of getting around, it will also provide you with a unique perspective of the city, plus its good for the environment as well.

Eating out

Eating out in London will be expensive, especially if you stick to the main tourist areas. However, once you head away from the main touristy districts prices will start to drop. Brick Lane, for example, is a great area if you’re in the mood for a curry, plus the competition between restaurants means that you will get a better deal. Again, a bit of pre-travelling research, such as checking out London online guides like Time Out London, will provide you an idea of the best budget places to eat.

Special offers

What many travellers overlook is the potential to snap up special offers. Sometimes restaurants and bars will advertise these outside their venue, in which case make a mental note when you’re passing and head back there later. You might also be able to get special discount offers on admission tickets to London attractions, get online and check out discount websites to see what offers are available and if you qualify.

Travel out of season

By avoiding London during summer and around Christmas you’re likely to get better deals on hotels, flights and entrance fees. Also try and find out when the UK holidays are, for example throughout the year schools will have short breaks and you’ll often find that prices will rise during these weeks.

Top Lake District Hikes For Beginners

Latrigg is perfect for beginner walkers that want to hone their hiking skills

Latrigg is perfect for beginner walkers that want to hone their hiking skills

From small hills to imposing mountains, the rugged scenery of the Lake District has made it a favourite destination for hundreds of thousands of British hikers. While its most challenging climbs may also be its most memorable, there are plenty of hiking trails in the Lake District for absolute beginners and budding hiking experts.

These six Lake District hikes are perfect for honing your skills before conquering the region’s biggest fells. Each is achievable in under four hours or – in some cases – just 20 to 30 minutes.

1.    Orrest Head

Orrest Head is the perfect warm-up for the Lake District’s more challenging walking routes. Suitable for small children and elderly visitors alike, the 20-minute climb up to the summit of Orrest Head offers some great views of Windermere and beyond.

Conveniently located for visitors staying in Windermere, this walk’s simplicity and rewarding summit views make it a great ‘first fell’ for visitors seeking a walk that’s far from challenging, yet offers great rewards.

2.    Cat Bells

Cat Bells might be one of the Lake District’s most popular fells, at least after Orrest Head. Popular with beginner hikers, this walk takes around two hours to complete and takes you through some of the Lake District’s most remarkable terrain.

Begin the walk from Little Town Chapel, which is easy to access from Keswick. From here, it’s a 3.3-mile walk to the summit. There is some light roadside walking but the light traffic makes it almost completely risk-free.

In high season, this walk attracts a large amount of walkers staying in Keswick. Pack a tasty lunch and enjoy it t the summit before you complete the one-hour journey to the Little Town Chapel car park.

3.    Latrigg

Latrigg’s modest height and excellent views of Borrowdale make it one of the most rewarding walks in the Lake District. Ideal for beginners, this walking trail is about the same level of difficulty as Cat Bells – which is to say, it’s far from difficult.

Easily accessible from Keswick, the walk to the summit of Latrigg takes about three hours in good weather. The total walk is around six miles in total, making it a more time consuming walk than the journey up and down Cat Bells.

4.    Aira Force

The Lake District’s most aesthetically appealing waterfall can be accessed by one of the region’s best walking trails. Pass wish trees and beautiful Lake District scenery on the way to the inspiring Aira Force, which has enchanted locals for centuries.

Aira Force was an obsession of Lake District poet William Wordsworth, who visited the waterfall several times for creative inspiration. The waterfall is accessible via an impressive lakeside trail that takes visitors past a wish tree – be sure to bring a coin!

5.    Binsey

Binsey was one of the favourite fells of legendary British walker Alfred Wainwright, who authored many guidebooks on scenic walking. The 4.1-mile trail up and down Binsey takes visitors through some of the Lake District’s most picturesque terrain.

Accessible via the small settlement of Bewaldeth, the journey up Binsey begins with a steep climb that brings walkers up almost 300 metres above their starting point to the summit.

From here, it’s a gentle walk back down through charming Lake District scenery. Be sure to pack a good camera for this two-hour trip, as the views on offer are stunning and certainly not to be missed.

6.    Borger Dair

Described as the ‘finest square mile in Lakeland’ by Alfred Wainwright, Border Dair is an excellent four-mile trek that’s perfect for beginner walkers looking to improve their skills.

Pass a variety of holiday lodges for sale in the Lake District on the way to this walk, which will take you to Castle Crag – one of many hill forts build in the Lake District over 2,000 years ago.

The Lazy Lakes: A Lake District Trip Without the Hillwalking

There’s more to the Lake District than just the hillwalking

There’s more to the Lake District than just the hillwalking

Most of the holiday guides for the Lake District revolve around the area’s excellent walking trails. From hilltop treks to lakeside trails, it’s tough to find a ‘things to do’ list for the Lake District without at least a couple of walks prominently featured.

Despite the publicity that the great walks attract, however, there’s far more to the Lake District than just hillwalking. These eight ideas from South Lakeland Lodges are the perfect choice for Lake District visitors seeking something other than the typical hilltop, lakeside, and valley treks.

1.    Visit the Cumberland Pencil Museum

This cute and charming museum might sound a little bizarre, but its cool collection of pencils makes it a great place to bring the kids. Let your children create amazing modern art, see the world’s longest colour pencil, and learn the secrets of modern animation.

2.    Ride the Ullswater Steamer

While most people combine a ride on the Ullswater Steamer with a shore walk, it’s perfectly fine to enjoy this historical boat ride by itself. Board one of the Ullswater Steamers and travel across this charming lake, taking in some of the region’s most incredible countryside in the process.

3.    Explore the Lakes Aquarium

The Lakes Aquarium is the perfect place to get up close and personal with the life beneath the surface of the lakes. Learn about local flora and fauna from the Lake District to the shores of Africa in this great aquarium, which is complete with its own underwater section that takes visitors under Lake Windermere.

4.    Visit the World of Beatrix Potter

Visit Europe’s only official Beatrix Potter attraction. The World of Beatrix Potter is located in Windermere and is one of the best attractions in the Lake District for any travellers with young children. Give the kids – or any grown-up Beatrix Potter fans – a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the world of Peter Rabbit and friends.

5.    Ride the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway

Travel through the Lake District on a historical steam train. This 3-½ mile railway takes you from the town of Haverthwaite to the edge of Lake Windermere. Perfect for history gurus and young children alike, this charming train is one of the best ways to experience the Lake District like previous generations.

6.    Conquer your fear of heights at TreeTop Trek

Take part in 35 exciting, challenging, and confidence-building treetop challenges on one of England’s most thrilling obstacle courses. TreeTop Trek puts visitors up to 17 metres above the ground on a thrilling obstacle course, complete with a 250-metre zipline.

The course is split into two sections – a low course for young children, and a more demanding high ropes course for adults – making it the perfect choice for families with toddlers and grown-up kids.

7.    Fish on the Lake District’s best rivers

The Lake District is a great destination for fishing experts, and many of the region’s rivers are rich with salmon and trout. In May, the region hosts the Cumbria Fishing Festival, in which anglers from around the country congregate in the Lake District.

Whether you’re visiting for the festival or an independent trip, it’s important to get permission from the local authorities to fish in the Lake District. Consult the local Angling Associations for more information on fishing in the Lake District.

8.    Embark on a scenic road trip

Who says you need to enjoy the Lake District’s great scenery on foot? Pack your car and embark on a scenic road trip between some of the Lake District’s most charming local towns.

The road from Ambleside to Keswick, and then further to Ullswater is regarded as one of the region’s best. Likewise, the drive from Keswick to Borrowdale and then onwards to Buttermere offers 33 miles of stunning Lake District views.
