Motorcycle Rides Worth Taking Around the World

If you own a motorcycle, few things will top the experience of a breathtaking road trip across beautiful and exotic landscapes. Thanks to the relative ease in which a motorbike can move and be parked, they are modes of transport which help someone to freely explore the whole world. With this in mind, those with the means ought to consider a motorcycle journey someplace far from home.

However, one must never forget the importance of safety when it comes to riding a motorcycle. Riding in a regular vehicle, such as a car or a truck, is dangerous enough, but in those situations, you are essentially protected by an entire suit of armor. With a motorcycle, you are completely exposed to any dangers that may come.

This is why it is crucial that you wear a helmet and that you know everything about riding your motorcycle safely, including knowing how to operate it completely. You should know how to handle inclement weather conditions, and you should be an expert at using the brakes on your motorcycle as well. Don’t forget the coverage either; even cheap motorcycle insurance is better than riding unprotected.

That being said, there’s a lot of fun to be had on a motorcycle as well. There are many exciting routes and rides for you to experience around the world on your motorcycle, and the following are just a few of what can be considered the best motorbike rides in the world.

If you are looking for a route in Europe, one route that is definitely worth experiencing on your motorcycle is the Troll Ladder of Norway. It is only a short stretch of road, but there are no less than 11 hairpin bends that go down a descent that is a mere 9 degrees angle. It is a very intense descent that is made all the more intense by the fact that the road is typically wet with a great deal of fog.

The Amalfi Coast of Italy is also definitely worth experiencing, with all of the gorgeous scenery and colorful villages, such as Positano. You will even be driving along the edge of a cliff for part of the way, so you should keep in mind that it is not for those who are unwilling to take risks.

In Australia, the Great Ocean Road is definitely worth experiencing. With straights and bends on this road for the 151 miles between Torquay and Allansford, this route provides amazing views all the way.

Asia offers thousands of miles of open road to motorcycle riders. If you decide to go on the Trans-Siberian route in Russia, you will see everything from forests, historic cities, and all sorts of interesting people along the way. Additionally, you can experience riding a motorcycle through Tibet to Mount Everest. You can ride from Kathmandu, across the border of China, all the way over to the Everest Base Camp, seeing all sorts of amazing sights along the way.

For those who would prefer to stay in the Americas, there is an excellent experience available on the west coast, particularly California between San Francisco and Los Angeles. However, the stretch between San Francisco and Portland is definitely worth experiencing as well, with the view consisting of amazing redwood forests and beautiful beaches. In South America, there is the Los Caracoles Pass of Chile, where you can see the Andes, the Chilean border, and then make a thrilling drop down to Santiago de Chile.

While there is a lot to keep in mind in terms of motorcycle safety, there’s a lot that is definitely worth experiencing if you are willing to take the risks that are associated with being on a motorcycle. It is a personal decision that you have to make if you want to have this travel experience. However, some of these experiences can be the experiences of a lifetime.

3 Reasons You Should See Lucknow at Least Once in Your Life

Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, is often overlooked in favor of bigger cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Yet this city is one of the oldest in India, and it has long been a cultural hub on the Indian subcontinent. Here are three reasons you should see Lucknow at least once in your life. We’ll give specific recommendations as well as general advice for those considering a visit.

The Architecture

The Bara Imambara is perhaps the largest hall in the world with no supporting pillars. It is one of the most famous landmarks in Lucknow. Pictures of the 50 meter by 15 meter hall don’t do it justice. The classic architecture is amazing. The Chhota Imambara and its gold-plated domes are reminiscent of similar and more crowded attractions elsewhere in India.

The Rumi Darwaza was built in the same style as gates in Istanbul. This is why it is called the Turkish Gateway. Lucknow is dotted with landmarks that hint at its multicultural history. That’s why the Husainabad Clock Tower looks so much like Big Ben in the UK. Ambedkar Memorial Park is beautiful, and the sight is breathtaking when it is lit up at night.

Another reason to visit Lucknow is the fact that the city is one of the closet major cities to Agra. If you search for a Lucknow hotel booking online, you can find affordable five star hotels in Lucknow that resemble palaces for less than a mid-market hotel in Agra. If you take the five to six hour train ride from Agra to Lucknow, the Lucknow railway station is a work of art worth a tour on its own.

The History

Lucknow was founded in the 13th century. Chowk, the oldest part of Lucknow , is like a step back in time, the old world architecture often stretching for a block before modernity intrudes. For those interested in the British colonial period, the ruins of the British Residency in Lucknow are a must-see. During the 1857 Indian Mutiny, several thousand British officers tried to take refuge here. Two thousand are buried on the grounds, while the building itself is a memorial museum. There are a number of other memorials related to the Revolt of 1857, such as the Begum Hazrat Mahal.

The Culture

Lucknow, also called the City of Nawabs, has been home to many of India’s greatest poets and scholars. It has long been home to artists and musicians. You can visit schools that teach classical music to students there today, while the Lalit Kala Academy and Sangeet Natak Kala Academy regularly hold shows for the public. The Lucknow Mahotsav or Lucknow Festival is an annual ten-day cultural event you must see if you can arrive in time.

Lucknow is famous for its cuisine. Chaat is popular here, while kebabs and a number of other dishes are worth the trip to sample them at least once in your life.

Lucknow contains a mix of classic Indian, Mughal, British colonial and modern architecture, and you can find many testaments to the city’s place in history. Lucknow still delivers its classic cuisine, handicrafts and arts to the public and is a must visit destination.

Trip Planning and Expenses Guide for Budget Travelers in Bali

Although exotic and spectacular, Bali is surprisingly a not so expensive travel destination. It’s actually budget-friendly, if you know how to plan and you do it ahead. The ongoing waves of tourists visiting the island did not make the prices go up, luckily. Seasoned visitors say that $50 a day is good enough if you’re committed to enjoying Bali. Here’s what you need to pay attention to for staying within the budget:

The transport

Apart from flights (which you must book in advance), every region in Bali will require you to find an affordable means of transportation, because you’ll be visiting around. Taxis are convenient, but also the most pricey. To spare your budget, you could rent a motorbike, which can be only $3 per day. Also, it’s fun. If you’re not inclined to drive yourself, then opt for a motorbike with a driver.

The accommodation

Bali hotels are for the rich. Hostels and other places for backpackers are cheap but can be such a nuisance. Instead, why not choose private villa accommodation, since prices can be as low as $11 a night? If you’re bringing a group of friends along, you can all stay within the same house, as long as you pick the correct bedroom count. Bali luxury villas Seminyak offers are ideal for those with a taste for comfort and style, so if you’re going to Seminyak you must consider those.

Eating out

While hotel restaurants treat guests to delicious local dishes, like spicy noodle soup or the amazing martabak pancakes, street food is also recommended to the curious. This is incredibly cheap – you can eat well with less than $2. Don’t be shy and visit a warung as well – this is the generic term for local Balinese restaurants with smaller prices than the hotel ones. Stay away from European-owned or other such venues, because those are pricey.

Is the spa worth it?

If you’re in for a spa treatment, start with a massage house. The expense is minimal (around 6$) and is worth it. One hour of massage is definitely rejuvenating. Of course, the more you add to it (herbal essences, oils etc.), the more expensive it becomes. Stay away from spas situated within facilities such as a luxury hotel.

Beach activities

Who can stay away from surfing, parasailing or other beach and water sports in Bali? The weather conditions and the whole setting are marvelous after all. Even better, you can negotiate the price, especially if you’re opting for more of the kind or if you’re not alone.

What to avoid

Besides what was already mentioned, there are several other temptations that can waste your hard-earned money. One of them is the overpriced cocktail, latte or even beer or water bottle.  Then, souvenir shops and markets may make you spend more than planned; make sure you have a clear idea of what you want and resist the impulse to buy more. Concerning flight tickets, book anything related early on. Any late purchase from the airline may cost you more. Buy everything online in advance.

Before departure, remember to check how much your bank charges for ATM withdrawals and credit card usage. Tourists, who forget this detail, are later shocked to see they have much less money in the bank than expected.

But getting off the beaten path in Malaysia pays big dividends for adventurous travellers. Here are five of the best less-talked-about things to do in Malaysia.

Playing from Leftfield: Crazy Sports from Around the World

trw_shikiccha

by  kilted01

The annual sporting calendar is full of physical contests that engage, enrapture and entertain in equal measure. However, away from the glare of the media spotlight, a culture of alternative sporting heroes thrives. Putting their minds and bodies on the line in some of the strangest ways imaginable, these competitors are the embodiment of eccentricity.

Keeping on top of the latest developments in the eccentric sports world isn’t easy, which is why betfair have put together an alternative sports calendar. Documenting some of the strangest events of the year, this calendar is a great reference point for anyone who likes to enjoy something from leftfield.

To give you a flavour of the alternative sports world and give you a glimpse into some of the world’s different cultures at the same time, we’ve listed three of the weirdest games from the UK and beyond.

Shin Kicking Championship: Shoes, Straw and Strangeness

In the spectrum of toe-curling, pain-inducing sports, shin kicking has to be the worst. Originating in England and dating back to 1636, the game has one simple premise which is to kick your opponent into submission. To give you a more detailed look at the rules of shin kicking, check this out:

  • Competitors start by holding their opponent by the shoulders (or lapels) with arms straight.

  • The contest will be started, finished (if necessary) and judged, by an arbiter, known as a Stickler. The Stickler decides the fairness of a contest.

  • A contest is decided on the best of three throws – i.e. two successful throws results in a win.

Initially a somewhat more gentle sport (as gentle as a shin kick can be), shin kicking gradually became more brutal over the centuries, with the 19th century proving to be a particularly rough patch as villages took on each other in a battle of pride. Today, competitors from around the world pack their trousers with as much straw as possible before taking part in the competitions such as the Cotswold Olimpicks which take part in May every year.

Cheese Rolling Championship: A Tasty Cheese Roll

If you’ve never rolled a wheel of cheese down a hill and then chased after it like a mad man or woman, then you haven’t lived, according to the organisers of the Cheese Rolling Championships . Taking place in one of the UK’s traditional cheese-making counties, Gloucestershire, the event is actually a lot more dangerous than it sounds.

Every May for the last 200 years, contestants have converged at the top of Cooper’s Hill in Gloucester and wait for the famous cheese wheel to be launched down the slope. Pitched at a gradient of 1:2, controlling your pace down the hill is no mean feat and as people skid and fall in pursuit of the cheese, medics are always close by.

The person who manages to make it down the hill in one piece and catch the cheese before anyone else is declared the winner and handed the prize dairy product.

Buzkashi: When Dead Goats Meet Polo

When you think of polo, you think glasses of champagne, majestic horses and fancy clothes. There’s no doubt that polo is one of the most impressive spectacles on the sporting calendar. However, because we’re looking at the weirdest sports in the world, this safe sport isn’t one we’re including in this list. Instead, we’ve turned our gaze towards Asia and a sport known as buzkashi.

Believed to be derived from an early form of polo present in Iran and, moreover, the inspiration for modern day polo, this sport requires participants to drag a headless goat carcass while on horseback. As with most sports that involves two teams competing against each other, buzkashi includes a goal and the players all try to score as many as possible.

Despite sounding like a relic that we’ve excavated from sporting history, buzkashi is actually a game that’s still played today. Most popular in Uzbekistan, modern teams usually hail from the same family and top-level players can earn huge significant sums of money through monthly payments, bonuses and special gifts that can include luxury cars.

Alternative sports, unsurprisingly, do not usually show up on everyone’s radar but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth watching. While the annual shin kicking championships might not hold the same sort of prestige as the World Cup, it’s an entertaining spectacle nonetheless. The three whacky sports listed in this article are the tip of a very large iceberg and if you want to check out more we suggest you check out the alternative sports calendar.

Road Trip Around Northern Thailand

Scooter in Thailand (Creative Commons)

Scooter in Thailand (Creative Commons)

Although you may not find yourself carrying huge sacks of rice, or transporting your entire family by scooter, you can still have a fantastic time discovering northern Thailand on two wheels. You’ll find that you’ll be able to explore the country at ease and have an amazing time doing it as well. Not only is this probably the best way to explore Thailand, it’s also the most fun and most adventurous. It can be a little dangerous at times, but this only adds to the experience and means you’ll have some great stories to tell your friends and family when you return.

Finding the Perfect Scooter

To be able to enjoy Thailand on two wheels, you’ll need to have two wheels to begin with. This may seem like a simple task, especially when so many of the locals use scooters as their only means of transport. However, quality and efficiency are two things you should look out for when renting a scooter; you don’t want to break down fifty miles out of the city centre.

Renting a better scooter may cost a little more, but you still won’t be breaking the bank, and it’s worth the extra buck or two to get one that works. Freeing up some money for your trip by finding cheaper flights, at sites like Cheapflights Australia, can also let you spend a little more when you’re actually out there too.

Where to Travel

After you’ve rented your perfect scooter, you’ll need to have a plan of where you want to travel. Sometimes it’s fun to let the open road take you, but this can be a little daunting for first time travellers to Thailand and you don’t want to miss out on some of the amazing sights that you should be visiting. One of the most popular routes to travel on is the Mae Hong Son Loop. This route begins and ends in Chiang Mai, and is full of twists and turns, bumps and bashes, that make for a real journey of a life time. As the route is around 600km long, you’ll need a strong stomach and a real feel for your scooter as you don’t want to get motion sick or be prone to injury!

What You’ll See

Over about three to four days (which is considered the perfect amount of time to spend on the route) you’ll experience real Thai scenery and culture, with great places to rest your head overnight. A plethora of lakes and mountains await your eager eyes on this trip, all of which can be seen from your scooter, or you can choose to stop and explore a little on foot.

There are more interesting aspects of the road journey too; you can choose to visit the Karen Long-neck tribes. An incredibly cultural, but controversial side of the journey, it is down to you whether you agree with visiting the refugee camps. The Buddhist Temple in the town of Mae Hong Son is also worth a visit, even if you only view the building from the outside, make sure you do so at night, where you’ll get the full beauty of the town and the culture.
