Trip Planning and Expenses Guide for Budget Travelers in Bali

Although exotic and spectacular, Bali is surprisingly a not so expensive travel destination. It’s actually budget-friendly, if you know how to plan and you do it ahead. The ongoing waves of tourists visiting the island did not make the prices go up, luckily. Seasoned visitors say that $50 a day is good enough if you’re committed to enjoying Bali. Here’s what you need to pay attention to for staying within the budget:

The transport

Apart from flights (which you must book in advance), every region in Bali will require you to find an affordable means of transportation, because you’ll be visiting around. Taxis are convenient, but also the most pricey. To spare your budget, you could rent a motorbike, which can be only $3 per day. Also, it’s fun. If you’re not inclined to drive yourself, then opt for a motorbike with a driver.

The accommodation

Bali hotels are for the rich. Hostels and other places for backpackers are cheap but can be such a nuisance. Instead, why not choose private villa accommodation, since prices can be as low as $11 a night? If you’re bringing a group of friends along, you can all stay within the same house, as long as you pick the correct bedroom count. Bali luxury villas Seminyak offers are ideal for those with a taste for comfort and style, so if you’re going to Seminyak you must consider those.

Eating out

While hotel restaurants treat guests to delicious local dishes, like spicy noodle soup or the amazing martabak pancakes, street food is also recommended to the curious. This is incredibly cheap – you can eat well with less than $2. Don’t be shy and visit a warung as well – this is the generic term for local Balinese restaurants with smaller prices than the hotel ones. Stay away from European-owned or other such venues, because those are pricey.

Is the spa worth it?

If you’re in for a spa treatment, start with a massage house. The expense is minimal (around 6$) and is worth it. One hour of massage is definitely rejuvenating. Of course, the more you add to it (herbal essences, oils etc.), the more expensive it becomes. Stay away from spas situated within facilities such as a luxury hotel.

Beach activities

Who can stay away from surfing, parasailing or other beach and water sports in Bali? The weather conditions and the whole setting are marvelous after all. Even better, you can negotiate the price, especially if you’re opting for more of the kind or if you’re not alone.

What to avoid

Besides what was already mentioned, there are several other temptations that can waste your hard-earned money. One of them is the overpriced cocktail, latte or even beer or water bottle.  Then, souvenir shops and markets may make you spend more than planned; make sure you have a clear idea of what you want and resist the impulse to buy more. Concerning flight tickets, book anything related early on. Any late purchase from the airline may cost you more. Buy everything online in advance.

Before departure, remember to check how much your bank charges for ATM withdrawals and credit card usage. Tourists, who forget this detail, are later shocked to see they have much less money in the bank than expected.

Five unusual things to do in Malaysia

Malaysia has hundreds of popular tourist attractions, from the hustle and bustle of Central Market in Chinatown, amazing multi-cultural cuisine
, to the illuminating sights of the tallest twin towers in the world as the Petronas Towers glow at night.

This south-east Asian country offers a rich and varied mix of culture and sightseeing opportunities for visitors, and the draw of big cities like Kuala Lumpur mean that lots of travellers get caught up in the tourist trail, and the Malaysian economy benefits to the tune of around £11 billion per year.

The tourism economy in Malaysia has been vital in efforts to rebuild the country following the devastating tsunami of 2004, and the country has bounced back remarkably well thanks to the success of major tourist attractions in keeping Malaysia at the forefront of south-east Asian travel destinations.

But getting off the beaten path in Malaysia pays big dividends for adventurous travellers. Here are five of the best less-talked-about things to do in Malaysia.

art deco central market in Kuala Lumpur

Meet real hunter-gatherers

Around 200 of the ancient Penan tribe are still living by traditional nomadic means, and you can take a trip out to Sarawak to see how they live within and care for a rainforest that has been devastated by logging, but still provides a home to their tribe.

Zip line over a theme park

At the Sunway Lagoon theme park in Petaling Jaya, you can hook yourself up to a zip line and fly over the heads of people splashing around in the waters below on the world’s largest man-made surf beach. Only in Malaysia!

Experience Ultimate Beatdown

Malaysia likes its sport to be a lot like its weather: hot and heavy! For the last five years a major attraction has been the Ultimate Beatdown mixed martial arts fight league. If you want to see the region’s best fighters go head-to-head, and enjoy a few wagers on the latest MMA betting odds, Ultimate Beatdown is the event for you. You can find out when and where the next MMA extravaganza is taking place at the Ultimate Beatdown Facebook page.

Boost fertility with an island tour

The picturesque island of Langkawi is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway, or a weekend of water sports and fun on some of the world’s best beaches. It is an island surrounded by islands, and you can hop on one of Langkawi’s many boat tours to visit places like The Island of the Pregnant Maiden, which looks like a pregnant lady lying on her back, and is said to have mystical powers to aid fertility.

Eat river prawns at a Hindu shrine

Standing at over 100 metres high, the Batu Caves are a Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan, and you are unlikely to see a more impressive shrine without going to India. Busiest during the Hindu festival of Thaipusam, the caves are also a honeypot for rock climbing enthusiasts, but one of the best reasons to visit them is the incredible food served at Pang Heong restaurant, where the dish of fresh river prawns and flat noodles brings locals and tourists together over sumptuous food.

Playing from Leftfield: Crazy Sports from Around the World

trw_shikiccha

by  kilted01

The annual sporting calendar is full of physical contests that engage, enrapture and entertain in equal measure. However, away from the glare of the media spotlight, a culture of alternative sporting heroes thrives. Putting their minds and bodies on the line in some of the strangest ways imaginable, these competitors are the embodiment of eccentricity.

Keeping on top of the latest developments in the eccentric sports world isn’t easy, which is why betfair have put together an alternative sports calendar. Documenting some of the strangest events of the year, this calendar is a great reference point for anyone who likes to enjoy something from leftfield.

To give you a flavour of the alternative sports world and give you a glimpse into some of the world’s different cultures at the same time, we’ve listed three of the weirdest games from the UK and beyond.

Shin Kicking Championship: Shoes, Straw and Strangeness

In the spectrum of toe-curling, pain-inducing sports, shin kicking has to be the worst. Originating in England and dating back to 1636, the game has one simple premise which is to kick your opponent into submission. To give you a more detailed look at the rules of shin kicking, check this out:

  • Competitors start by holding their opponent by the shoulders (or lapels) with arms straight.

  • The contest will be started, finished (if necessary) and judged, by an arbiter, known as a Stickler. The Stickler decides the fairness of a contest.

  • A contest is decided on the best of three throws – i.e. two successful throws results in a win.

Initially a somewhat more gentle sport (as gentle as a shin kick can be), shin kicking gradually became more brutal over the centuries, with the 19th century proving to be a particularly rough patch as villages took on each other in a battle of pride. Today, competitors from around the world pack their trousers with as much straw as possible before taking part in the competitions such as the Cotswold Olimpicks which take part in May every year.

Cheese Rolling Championship: A Tasty Cheese Roll

If you’ve never rolled a wheel of cheese down a hill and then chased after it like a mad man or woman, then you haven’t lived, according to the organisers of the Cheese Rolling Championships . Taking place in one of the UK’s traditional cheese-making counties, Gloucestershire, the event is actually a lot more dangerous than it sounds.

Every May for the last 200 years, contestants have converged at the top of Cooper’s Hill in Gloucester and wait for the famous cheese wheel to be launched down the slope. Pitched at a gradient of 1:2, controlling your pace down the hill is no mean feat and as people skid and fall in pursuit of the cheese, medics are always close by.

The person who manages to make it down the hill in one piece and catch the cheese before anyone else is declared the winner and handed the prize dairy product.

Buzkashi: When Dead Goats Meet Polo

When you think of polo, you think glasses of champagne, majestic horses and fancy clothes. There’s no doubt that polo is one of the most impressive spectacles on the sporting calendar. However, because we’re looking at the weirdest sports in the world, this safe sport isn’t one we’re including in this list. Instead, we’ve turned our gaze towards Asia and a sport known as buzkashi.

Believed to be derived from an early form of polo present in Iran and, moreover, the inspiration for modern day polo, this sport requires participants to drag a headless goat carcass while on horseback. As with most sports that involves two teams competing against each other, buzkashi includes a goal and the players all try to score as many as possible.

Despite sounding like a relic that we’ve excavated from sporting history, buzkashi is actually a game that’s still played today. Most popular in Uzbekistan, modern teams usually hail from the same family and top-level players can earn huge significant sums of money through monthly payments, bonuses and special gifts that can include luxury cars.

Alternative sports, unsurprisingly, do not usually show up on everyone’s radar but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth watching. While the annual shin kicking championships might not hold the same sort of prestige as the World Cup, it’s an entertaining spectacle nonetheless. The three whacky sports listed in this article are the tip of a very large iceberg and if you want to check out more we suggest you check out the alternative sports calendar.

Samal Island

Within sight of Davao and Talicud is the Garden City of Samal which is easily reached by ferry, barge and passenger boats covering the 2 km water-way. The island has a rich history as was bombed by the Japanese during WW2 and also occupied by them for many years.

Bon Island, Phuket, Thailand by Dawn in Phuket (Creative Commons)

Visiting Thailand is one of the most magical adventures you could have and while you will be inundated with things to do in Thailand, a stay in Phuket will provide you with a completely different voyage. With flights to Phuket from the UK, you can incorporate a visit to the island before you head over to the mainland, creating a twin-centre trip to this exotic paradise. Come rain or shine, there’s plenty to do once you’re there, but these are some gems that you really shouldn’t miss.

Visit Phang Nga Bay

An afternoon here will make you realise just how breathtaking the world can be. Take a moment to absorb the beauty of the limestone cliffs that jut out of the waters and take a tour of James Bond Island and Koh Panyee – two of the more popular sights in the bay.

Wander Old Phuket Town

You’ll be surprised at just how much you can find in this sleepy capital. From the funky shops and Chinese architecture to the delicious fare at the local restaurants that will help to keep your energy high, the old town is an absolute must-see.

Spend a day in Chalong

Located in the southern portion of the island, Chalong is home to a whole host of sights to see, including the Wat Chalong temple which is as beautiful as it is inspiring. As the island’s spiritual centre, it’s as popular with the locals as it is with visitors.

Meanwhile, the Big Buddha may be a fairly recent addition to the island, but as it towers over the southern portion, it helps to reflect the importance of spirituality on its island home. As you drive up to visit the monument, you will be able to catch a glimpse of authentic Thailand and once you’re at the top, the panoramic views are incredible.

Relax on Phi-Phi Island

Take a day or two to fully appreciate the beauty and splendour of this Thai hotspot. For many, it’s the reason for a visit to Phuket and its laid-back nature, golden sands, azure waters and beach-fronted jungle add to its allure.

Road Trip Around Northern Thailand

Scooter in Thailand (Creative Commons)

Scooter in Thailand (Creative Commons)

Although you may not find yourself carrying huge sacks of rice, or transporting your entire family by scooter, you can still have a fantastic time discovering northern Thailand on two wheels. You’ll find that you’ll be able to explore the country at ease and have an amazing time doing it as well. Not only is this probably the best way to explore Thailand, it’s also the most fun and most adventurous. It can be a little dangerous at times, but this only adds to the experience and means you’ll have some great stories to tell your friends and family when you return.

Finding the Perfect Scooter

To be able to enjoy Thailand on two wheels, you’ll need to have two wheels to begin with. This may seem like a simple task, especially when so many of the locals use scooters as their only means of transport. However, quality and efficiency are two things you should look out for when renting a scooter; you don’t want to break down fifty miles out of the city centre.

Renting a better scooter may cost a little more, but you still won’t be breaking the bank, and it’s worth the extra buck or two to get one that works. Freeing up some money for your trip by finding cheaper flights, at sites like Cheapflights Australia, can also let you spend a little more when you’re actually out there too.

Where to Travel

After you’ve rented your perfect scooter, you’ll need to have a plan of where you want to travel. Sometimes it’s fun to let the open road take you, but this can be a little daunting for first time travellers to Thailand and you don’t want to miss out on some of the amazing sights that you should be visiting. One of the most popular routes to travel on is the Mae Hong Son Loop. This route begins and ends in Chiang Mai, and is full of twists and turns, bumps and bashes, that make for a real journey of a life time. As the route is around 600km long, you’ll need a strong stomach and a real feel for your scooter as you don’t want to get motion sick or be prone to injury!

Mae-Hong-Son-loop-Creative-Commons

What You’ll See

Over about three to four days (which is considered the perfect amount of time to spend on the route) you’ll experience real Thai scenery and culture, with great places to rest your head overnight. A plethora of lakes and mountains await your eager eyes on this trip, all of which can be seen from your scooter, or you can choose to stop and explore a little on foot.

There are more interesting aspects of the road journey too; you can choose to visit the Karen Long-neck tribes. An incredibly cultural, but controversial side of the journey, it is down to you whether you agree with visiting the refugee camps. The Buddhist Temple in the town of Mae Hong Son is also worth a visit, even if you only view the building from the outside, make sure you do so at night, where you’ll get the full beauty of the town and the culture.

Chiang Mai: Thailand’s Charming Second City

Doi Suthep Temple by Akuppa, Creative Commons

Thailand’s second largest city is really attracting crowds of people, drawn to the idea of escaping the chaotic hustle and bustle of Bangkok and seeing more of this wonderful country than just beautiful beaches.  Chiang Mai is incredibly relaxed and chilled out when compared to other frenetic destinations, meaning that those who want a slower pace of life during their vacation and a chance to really soak up the way of Thai life will adore being here.

It is also slightly cheaper than other popular tourist destinations in Thailand, meaning that visitors get more for their money here.

Situated in the foothills of the southern Himalayan Mountain Range, Chiang Mai’s excellent location makes it easy for visitors to access some of Thailand’s most breath-taking natural scenery.  Spend some time trekking through the rugged jungle.  There are some fantastic national parks and mountains right on the doorstep, complete with amazing waterfalls.  There is no better way to cool down on a trek than a dip in some of the inviting waterfall pools.  Thrill seekers can opt to go high into the tree tops, walking at dizzying heights along jungle canopy walks or whizzing along zip lines.  Spend some time on the river, enjoying a pleasant boat ride or some adventurous rafting.

In Chiang Mai people can learn about, and spend time with, Thailand’s iconic great animal, the elephant.  Chiang Mai zoo also provides for a nice day.

Take time to visit hill tribes to experience an altogether different way of life and be intrigued by the different traditions.

Hill road in Chiang Mai Province by Takeaway (Creative Commons)

Culture vultures will be right at home, and with a choice of over 300 temples to choose from there is plenty on offer.  One of the most famous, Wat Phathat Doi Suthep, is perched majestically in the mountains.  Enjoy the sweeping vistas whilst marvelling at this cultural gem.  Several other fine temples are within easy walking distance of each other within the city walls, including one that is home to a very life-like wax work figure of a famous monk.  The old city walls make for a nice walk, as you meander around, lost in a different world.  There are many interesting museums to learn more about this wonderful city and country.

For a city full of culture, Chiang Mai has managed to blend old with new, with many modern facilities and services, ensuring a most comfortable visit.

Chiang Mai is well known for its great selection of activities.  Take a Thai cookery course to impress friends back at home with your new culinary skills.  Take some yoga classes to learn the art of being focused and controlled whilst improving core strength, balance and flexibility, or try a spot of meditation to clear the cobwebs from your mind and experience a deep inner peace.  Those seeking a bit more action can take lessons in traditional Thai boxing and learn some Muay Thai strategies and moves.

There are many places to choose from for eating and drinking.  Whether you wish to sample some local fare or are hankering after some good home comfort food, you will find it all in Chiang Mai.  Enjoy some Thai beers, or even the local whisky, to round off your fun days.

Public transport around Chiang Mai is good, and it is an easy city to navigate.  It is also well linked to other parts of Thailand, by bus, train, mini-van and air.  There are also numerous day-trips available to nearby surrounding areas. For the cheapest flights to Chiang Mai look online but be sure to search for flights to Bangkok as well as sometimes it can be a lot cheaper to fly there and then travel North with a separate flight.

Unforgettable culinary experiences in Istanbul

Istanbul is famous for its delicious foods with both eastern and western influences and it hosts some of the most amazing places to eat in Turkey. The grand bazaars, the busy streets, the high class locations, they all hide wonderful restaurants more or less known by the tourists. There are millions of visitors who come to Istanbul every year just for the tasty, traditional dishes that they can only find here. It takes time and passion to find and enjoy these hidden culinary sanctuaries, but the experience is definitely worth it.

Particularly popular for its incredibly delicious Kebab, Istanbul hosts the most delightful Kebab restaurants in the whole country. Antiochia is one of the most well-known Kebab restaurants in Istanbul, especially for its delicious ?i? et, a wonderfully flavored dish made of marinated beef, grilled over a charcoal fire. Dürüm, an incredibly tender minced meat wrap with a nice combination of fresh vegetables, is unquestionably the most savory in town. Keep in mind that this is a relatively small restaurant and you might want to book a table before actually going there, just to avoid surprises.

Located in the heart of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, Gaziantep Burc Ocakbasi is a lovely restaurant that serves amazingly scrumptious food in a nicely decorated environment. Enticed by the delectable scent that comes from this apparently simple restaurant, people can enjoy delicious dishes ranging from appetizing salads to succulent meat. Being in the middle of the Grand Bazaar, this restaurant might be difficult to spot because of the everlasting crowded streets, but once you will find it, you won’t regret your journey!

Gram is another special place in Istanbul where you can taste mouth-watering dishes made by two passionate cooks. Even though Istanbul is a highly cosmopolitan city, sometimes it can be difficult for vegetarians to find a proper place to eat. Gram is suitable for vegetarians as it offers a wide palette of delicious foods made with seasonal vegetables, incredibly tempting pastries and guess what: there are all typically Turkish! Eating at Gram is a way of combining your way of life with the local culinary traditions. However, this classy restaurant can offer a variety of meat dishes as well as enticing deserts.

Situated on the Bosphorus, in an impressive boat-dock, Rumelihisikari Iskele is a high class restaurant offering a tremendously picturesque view of an inspiring medieval fortress. Visitors can enjoy an incredibly pleasant ambience along with the impeccable service delivered by the dedicated waiters and the talented chefs. The food here is extremely flavorful, the ingredients are always fresh and on top of it, there is quite a wide variety of traditional drinks available at the restaurant’s classy bar.

Detailed here are some established eateries in Istanbul but it’s always a delight to sample street food in new and exciting cultures. If you do venture outside of the restaurant scene, be sure to have up to date travel insurance just in case, your stomach takes a turn for the worse! For the best deals use Debenhams Travel Insurance.

Go Beyond the Glitz of Shanghai to Visit the Top Five Museums

Shanghai, China is a place of great economic success. It is a fast-paced and fast-developing city with a strong foothold in the financial world. Visitors to Shanghai come here to do business and to enjoy the excesses that come with success. Through all this modern progress some may forget to slow down and take a look at Shanghai’s rich history and strong culture. One way to appreciate Shanghai is to visit its top museums. Here are five of the city’s best and most fascinating.

Shanghai Museum

The Shanghai Museum is not what one would consider a beautiful piece of architecture from the outside. It looks rather cold and uninviting, but within its walls there are treasures to be found. It is perhaps the most famous museum in China and is divided into ten distinct sections which include paintings, calligraphy, ancient Chinese bronzes, jades, and more. You’ll find beautiful Chinese Ming and Qing-dynasty furniture and bronzes from the Shang and Zhou period among the many great artifacts on display.

Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre

Propaganda art has had a tremendous impact on the world’s politics and has shaped the beliefs of the masses through deception. The Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre has a collection of 5,000 posters from the Maoist era. These posters were distributed throughout communist China by Chairman Mao as a way to push his agenda upon the people. The museum consists of only two rooms in the basement of an apartment building and is unmarked. Though small and hard to find, it is a rare and unique collection that makes it well worth seeing. Admission is 20 yuan.

Shanghai Museum of Glass

The Shanghai Museum of Glass is the newest museum in Shanghai, built in what was once an operational glass factory. The neighbourhood is still an industrial area of rundown buildings, but that shouldn’t stop you from checking it out. From production to final product, the museum offers a look into the making of glass in many forms and gives visitors a chance to learn the history of glass in China and the West. You’ll also be treated to glass-blowing demonstrations. Even the exterior of the building is impressive, especially at night when LED lights behind the tiles reveal words in many languages related to glass.

Shanghai Natural Wild – Insect Kingdom

Though the name of this museum indicates a world of creepy crawlies, there’s much more to it than insects. In addition to insects like crickets, huge roaches, and butterflies you’ll be treated to the sight of creatures like snakes, turtles, frogs, and lizards. It consists of a first floor and basement with different sections for its variety of inhabitants. In the basement is the petting zoo where you can feed the goats for a small fee. The kids can also try their hand at fishing.

Shanghai Science & Technology Museum

With a theme of “Nature, People, and Science,” the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum has several fascinating displays like the Hall of Widest Spectrum of Life which displays the unique scenery of Yunnan Province. The Light of Wisdom Hall uses several interactive displays to demonstrate the importance of biology, chemistry, and math. You won’t want to miss Robot World where you’ll see a robot playing the piano and you can compete with other robots in chess and archery.

Shanghai is more than a global business giant. Its museums take you into other realms of China’s contributions to the world, a world being swallowed up by new technology and growth. It is Shanghai’s museums that preserve the many sides of China so no one will ever forget.
