Tips for Preparing for a Solo Winter Road Trip

Going on a road trip in the summer is very different than going on one during the winter months, especially if you’re going on that trip solo. Even though you’ve planned the perfect winter vacation, complete with skiing and sitting by the fire, you still have to drive there and drive in the area once you do. With that in mind, read on below for a few tips to prepare for going on a solo winter road trip that you should know.

Know Where Your Proof of Insurance Is

If you have recently been able to buy car insurance online, then you probably have printed out your proof of insurance. When you’re going on a solo trip to another place, it’s extremely important to keep this documentation on you. In other words, don’t leave it sitting on the desk in your office after you print it out and don’t just stuff it into the car. If you’re in an accident, you want to be able to provide your insurance papers as soon as asked by the officers who arrive on the scene.

Get a Winter Tune Up

One of the fist things you should do when preparing to go on a winter road trip is take your car in for a winter tune up. Things like putting on snow chains and tires, checking to make sure that your defroster and heat are working properly, and changing the wiper blades are very important. The last thing you want is to be struck on the side of the road alone in the middle of a blizzard until help comes.

Don’t Count Solely on Technology

There’s no denying that technology is a great thing and it’s saved a lot of lives. However, you don’t want to rely solely on technology to get you where you’re going. Cell phones can be in an area that is out of service, GPS’s can break, and anti-lock brakes might not always work to stop in time. It’s important to be prepared yourself and not rely on technology to do it for you. Make sure that you have an emergency supply kit for the winter just in case, because you never know when you might need it.

Tell Someone Your Route

Make sure to let someone know what route you’re taking to get to and from your destination. If you don’t arrive when you’re supposed to, then they can send out a search party and know where to look to find you. Winter conditions can be extremely dangerous so you want to be found as soon as humanly possible, if you have an accident or your car breaks down.

Keep Track of the Weather

Not only do you need to check the weather forecast before you leave for your winter vacation, you also need to install a weather app on your phone so that you can keep track of it as you travel.

These are just a few of the top tips out there for going on a winter road trip alone. Remember, keep your insurance where you can reach it easily and keep track of the weather and you should be fine.

How to Plan a Motorcycle Trip

motorcycle-trip-2

Taking a long road trip on your motorcycle can be a great idea. It is a wonderful way to see the country, while enjoying the open highways and sights. You can see much more of the landscapes and beautiful countryside, from a bike rather than a car, and of course you can have the wind in your face.

Whether you ride a bag-equipped cruiser, an all-out adventure bike, or a classic tourer, motorcycles have a way of tempting riders to chase the horizon. If you are enamored with taking a motorcycle trip, you need to know what to bring along, so that your trip is memorable and pleasurable and you never find yourself unprepared.

Map Out Your Trip

The first thing to do is to get out the maps and chart your exact trip plan. Take note of landmarks that you can use to make sure you are on the right roads.  Many smaller roads do not have good road signs so know where you will be and map it out using mileage. Give a copy of your trip itinerary to someone you trust, so if you are lost, they can look at the same map you have. Using GPS maps is also great, but be sure to pack a paper map because you may end up in places without good cellular service.

Make Sure Your Bike and You are in Top Shape

If your bike has a few miles on it, make sure you take it to an experienced and reputable service shop and get a full top to bottom maintenance check-up. Make sure that the fluid levels, the brakes, the lights and all other mechanical components are at their proper levels and working. Even if your bike is new, you should still get it serviced. Also get yourself a health check-up  too. Riding a bike is physical exercise after all. It will be better to find out any problems or potential ones before you get on the road.

Get a Luggage Rack

It is a smart idea to install a luggage rack on the back of your bike. Some people think that using a back pack or shoulder bag will suffice. But remember, you will be driving a long time and anything on your body will only get heavier as the day goes on. So put it on the bike.

Pack a Waterproof Riding Suit and Some Good Quality Motorcycle Boots

The most wonderful and also most potentially dangerous thing about riding your bike is that you will come in direct contact with the elements. And as we know, the weather can be unpredictable. Remember, if it starts raining while you’re on your bike trip, there aren’t any windows to roll up or doors to shut to keep you dry. So buy a comfortable, waterproof riding suit. This way, when the rain comes, you’ll stay nice and dry under the suit. Also get yourself some good quality motorcycle boots from the premiere place that sells the best budget motorcycle boots.

Pack Only What You Really Need

Before you start packing, make a list of the necessities and then add the things you want to bring along. Keep in mind, you can’t pack a lot. So think about each item and ask yourself if you could do without it, or if you really do need it. If you aren’t sure about something, you don’t need it. If it is something non-essential and you can purchase on the road, do it then, rather than carrying it with you the whole trip. You may find that you don’t actually need it.

The tips above will help you be prepared for your next motorcycle adventure. If you prepare yourself, you can enjoy the pleasures of the open road without worry.

Storage and Removal Checklist (Before you set off)

Having made the decision to take an extended trip, you’ve likely spent weeks if not months poring over maps and destination guides. You’ve probably also been saving like mad and have arranged a sabbatical from your job. This is the exciting part when everything is new and the world is your oyster. You can go anywhere, do anything, budget permitting of course.

Now you’ve made those important decisions, the nitty gritty details of what you’ll do with your home and possessions need attending too. You wouldn’t leave the trip itinerary until the last minute, and you shouldn’t leave safeguarding the home front to the last minute either.

Early Decisions

By now you probably know exactly how long you’ll be away. Certainly, if you have a job to come back to, your traveling time is less flexible than if, say, you’re self employed or freelance and can work digitally. As soon as possible, turn your thoughts to how you’ll arrange your home security, for both your possessions and the actual bricks and mortar. There are two main options:

  • Lock up and batten down the hatches then get friends or family to keep an eye on things
  • Rent your house out so you have some income while you’re gone.

Obviously the last option is only possible if you’re going for six months or more, unless you can arrange a private let to a friend. This is an option if you’re employing a pet or house sitter. Whichever route you take, start planning early. If you’re simply locking up, are you comfortable leaving all your possessions in situ or would you feel more secure if the most valuable items were under safer lock and key? If you’re hiring a pet or house sitter, leave plenty of time for searching and vetting your prospects so you feel at peace leaving them in your home while you’re gone. If you’re taking on a stranger, checking references takes time.

Renting Out Your Home

For longer trips, home rentals are an excellent idea. Short term lets run for six months minimum, and the easiest route is to ask a letting agent to find suitable short term tenants. They will do all the checking, deal with the finances, and keep an eye on both tenant and property through inspections and organising running repairs if necessary. Decide early on if you’ll let furnished, unfurnished or part furnished. A letting agent can advise if you’re unsure which option is best suited to your needs. Regardless of which way you go on this, there will be some items you don’t want to leave in general use. For those, whether you have just a few personal items or a more sizeable load that includes some furniture, self storage is your best bet. Local and convenient, self storage units are available in a multitude of sizes, enabling you to store everything from a few boxes to a whole household. The terms are flexible too, with no long contracts, so you can come and go more or less to suit yourself. Most will only ask for a week’s notice when it comes time to reclaim your possessions.

Packing

Packing can be fun (Creative Commons)

Start early. The more stuff you’re putting into storage the longer you’ll need so plan accordingly. Use sturdy boxes, and fill them as full as possible without making them too heavy (a tip here is to use more smaller boxes than fewer large ones). If you’re using a removal company to help you move bulky items into storage, keep in touch with them so they know well in advance if there are likely to be any changes to your plans. Also, ask them how they want to load your items so you can arrange to have them carried out of the house in the right order without having to climb over other things. If you’re getting friends to help, give them plenty of warning, arranging dates and times well in advance. It’s a lot of work and preparation, but by starting early and making checklists for decisions, packing, removals and storage you can avoid unnecessary stress. At the end of it all, you’ll set off with a clear head and no nagging worries. Bon Voyage!

Holiday Celebrate (Creative Commons)

Holiday Celebrate (Creative Commons)

It’s that time again. The sun’s starting to come out, it’s getting warmer, birds are singing and trees are blossoming. Forget work, start thinking about holidays! Holidays can of course have huge costs, and so to make sure you get the best from your holiday, it’s worth keeping these tips in mind before you leave the grind behind.

Insure yourself

Although it is an initial outlay cost, the worth of it could be massive. You can insure yourself very cheaply nowadays, and if anything does happen while abroad, your insurance should cover it and so the cost to you would be far lower than without insurance. For those Europeans staying within Europe, it’s worth making sure that you have a valid European Health Insurance Card, which will make medical treatment cheaper, and you may be able to claim back some costs when you return home.

Exchange foreign currency before you go abroad

Currency exchange rates are usually better if you exchange in advance, and there are various website that can compare the best providers. Never exchange at the airport – the rates there are usually among the worst you can get, and when you want to make the most of your money, that extra commission charge, or worse exchange rate, can make a huge difference if you’re exchanging a large amount of money.

Consider taking out a personal loan

If you’ve got your dream holiday planned in your mind, but you can’t quite afford it, then as long as you know you will be able to pay it off, you may wish to consider taking out a loan. There are a number of companies that can offer loans, such as Lend Me personal loans brokers, and brokers there will go through your credit history to ensure that your finances are good enough for you to be able to pay off the loan. While some may advise that it would be better to wait until you can afford it, you can say, “Whatever happened to seize the day?”

Plan ahead

Your holiday technically starts from the moment you decide to go on holiday! By planning ahead you can get the best prices on flights and hotels, and even some attractions. As well as the logistics of the holiday, it’s also worth working out what you’re going to want to do once you get out there, so buy a cheap guidebook at home and really research what you want to see and do – and maybe even book transport ahead. A well-planned holiday is far less stressful and often costs far less, and I find that when I’m planning my holiday I’m already excited before I even leave my home!

How to get a beach holiday on a budget!

Beach on Grand Cayman Author- Poco a poco (Creative Commons)

With the sunny months well and truly upon us, lots of us are considering an escape to the seaside – but what’s the best way to do it if you’re on a budget? In this article we’ll give you some recommendations on all the ingredients you need for the perfect low-cost holiday in the sun.

1.       All-inclusive deals

The biggest cost is that of the holiday itself, and all-inclusive deals still represent great value for money. If you’re set on a beach holiday, it’s a good idea to go to a specialist who will be able to offer the best deals – companies like On the Beach offer cheap breaks by the sea, and there’s a great selection of destinations and resorts to choose from.

What’s more, you can usually tailor an all-inclusive package to your needs – so if you just need a flight and hotel, you can drop transfers and car hire if you want.

2.       Transport

You might not want to spend all of your holiday on the beach, and if you want to explore your destination country a bit more you’ll probably need a car. Companies like Gosimply.com and Holidaycars.com provide an easy way to compare hundreds of international car hire companies so you can get the best deal wherever you’re travelling to.

Alternatively, with a bit of research beforehand you can get to know the local public transport situation – buses and trains are often much cheaper on the continent than in the UK, so they can represent great value for money.

3.       Travel money

Exchange rates can make a huge difference to how far your money goes while on holiday. While most of us buy our holiday money a week or so before we depart, it’s actually much better to use a service like TorFX, which allows you to set an exchange rate to buy your money at. If you set it up a few months in advance, you could end up buying at a much more beneficial rate that gives you much more spending money.

It’s also a good idea to budget for your holiday to avoid the need to withdraw cash while you’re over there, which can incur costly bank charges. Check with your bank about their rules on credit and debit card spending abroad and plan accordingly.

Travelling with your dog: What you need to know

Travelling with your dog (creative commons)

Travelling with your dog (creative commons)

There are few things more satisfying that exploring somewhere new with your family – so why shouldn’t that include your pets, too? Dogs love to discover new places, and having them will you will help avoid any concerns or worries you might have about them while you’re away. They also make great companions if you’re travelling alone.

There are a few things you can do to make travel easier on your pet while you book, such as ensuring that you travel on relatively quiet services, which will make the whole journey much less stressful for your dog. You’ll still need to prepare them for the trip in advance though, as long travelling times can be difficult for them. You should also make sure you have your pet’s travel insurance set up before you go – take a look at our guide below to make sure you and your dog are ready!

One month before you leave

About a month before you’re due to leave, you’ll need to start getting your dog ready to travel. If you haven’t already, purchase a carrier that your dog can comfortably sit, stand, lie down and turn around in, and help them feel comfortable in it by placing a few of their favourite toys inside it. A good way to get them to associate it with comfortable travelling is to take them on increasingly long journeys in their crate throughout the month, either in the car or on the train, so that when it comes to a long flight they will know what to expect and how to get themselves comfortable. Have a chat with your vet, too, and find out when you’ll need to have your pet vaccinated.

One week before you leave

The major task you’ll need to complete is to make sure that your pet has been treated for fleas and worms. Your vet will be able to do this for you, and will also give you all the paperwork that you need to travel with your dog. At the same time, you should also have your dog microchipped, and double check that the information is up-to-date with your contact details while you are away, just in case. If you’re concerned about how your dog will cope with the journey, it may also be worth buying some calming tablets or a calming spray to help them settle down.

--

The day before your journey

Get your pet’s crate ready with plenty of bedding, and ensure that they can comfortably move around inside it. Feed them no later than two hours before you set off, and make sure they have access to water throughout your trip. You should be ready to travel now, as long as your pet seems happy in its carrier – you might want to include a favourite toy as well though, in case they get nervous during the journey.

Carry On American Airlines

American Airlines continues its pioneering work in the area of cognitive behaviour therapy with the introduction of a new incentive to travel without cabin luggage. Those travelling with no luggage at all, not even the little shoulder bag to which we all resorted initially to avoid waiting at the baggage carousel for longer than we just spent flying across the Atlantic but now need just to circumvent extortionate checked baggage fees, now enjoy the dubious luxury of boarding first.

Ostensibly this innovation is meant to encourage travellers to check more luggage, paying the progressively higher rate per bag to participate in the lost luggage lottery that may result in having some of your own things to wear when you get where you’re going. But of course that’s not the real intention at all. The real intention is to change our cognitive evaluation of the carry-on so we start thinking of it as an extra, ancillary to the business of travel. Something for which eventually, naturally, we’ll be willing to pay.

Early boarding for those travelling with no more than they can fit under the seat accomplishes this nicely with the added advantage of dividing dissent — I don’t need to change my underwear every day, why should I have to pay for your compulsive hygiene habits? If you want your precious insulin so much you can rent it some space in the overhead compartment, sucker.

This is the evolution of air travel. There once was a time that a passenger on a flight was assumed to want to take something along and was allotted a little spot in the cargo hold. If you needed more space, you could pay for it and if you wanted to get out of the airport before your return flight boarded you could travel without luggage at all, just a little carry-on. Once we got used to that it was natural that those without checked luggage could pay less or, put another way, those with checked luggage would pay more. American Airlines is merely the first to apply this next logical step to cabin luggage. Soon enough the practise will be widely emulated and we’ll all be enured to the prospect of paying a fee to fly with anything more than the clothes on our back.

Nothing can stop this trend because it works and when it’s worked on cabin baggage it’s going to be applied to other travel perks that today we think of as being fundamental to the service. In time we’ll regard it as commonplace to pay a little extra if we want to be seated in proximity to our travel companion or children or if we aren’t willing to go on the standby list or are fussy about our destination. It seems inevitable that this practice will most certainly carry on.

The Non-Essentials

There’s absolutely no excuse for any travel blog to be adding to the self-replicating list of packing essentials. But when I saw this while shamelessly looking for ideas to steal I knew it was time for a voice of reason to finally bring a stop to the madness.

Bring some clothes, your passport and a way of getting to your money. There, you’re done. Don’t even bring a book — pick one up along the way and give it away when you’re done reading it. If you’ve got a lot of paper tickets and reservations and boarding passes then presumably someone printed out this article for you because in the age of the internet there’s no excuse for any of that. Few destinations can’t be reached these days without e-tickets and print-at-will boarding passes and if you just need reminders then by all means have one, single sheet in your back pocket but make sure it’s accessible in the cloud, too, because no vacation should be at risk because you lost a piece of paper or all your luggage or anything at all. In fact, scan your passport and your credit cards and put them in the cloud, too, and you can be stripped naked and left for dead under bridge and, assuming you don’t actually die, if you can get online and/or to your embassy you can get your stuff back and you’ll lose maybe a day (depending on how you wound up naked under a bridge, possibly two days).

That’s the most offensive thing about these helpful lists of essentials — well-intentioned or not the effect is to instill fear. What if you lose a button and you haven’t packed a miniature sewing kit? What if you have to sponge-bath in an airport toilet and you haven’t brought any hand soap? Well obviously in either of these cases you’ll have to turn around and head home and prepare a little better next year.

Sleepwear? In 2013? Who wears jammies in 2013? I suppose if you’re on a shooting weekend at the country estate of your uncle, the Duke of Elmsworth, in turn of the previous century England, then by all means have your man pack your flannel dressing gown. Otherwise I suggest you practice in advance to enure yourself to the risk that someone might see you in your underwear.

Money belts are itchy, sweaty, uncomfortable and above all useless artifacts from a thankfully dead era they shared with travelers’ checks and charter flights. Put your passport in your breast pocket, secured with a button, and your wallet in the other breast pocket, secured with another button. Everything else should be digital and if it’s not then for Christ’s sake stop using a “travel agency” — they belong in the past with money belts. Airport security is already pointlessly and absurdly time-consuming, you don’t want to be the one to hold up a line while you get half-naked so you can show your passport.

Clothes line, laundry detergent, hair dryer, spot remover, flashlight and first aid kit are just a few of the altogether pointless items that inevitably turn up on lists compiled by those who’ve failed to make the important distinction between that which you must pack and that which you can pack. Don’t pack anything because you might need it. Don’t pack anything that you can acquire just as or more easily at your destination. Never select what to pack motivated by fear.

I’m of the school that says you should assume that everything’s going to go well and pack accordingly. If things don’t go well, respond to this at the time, and be physically and psychically prepared to do so because you packed the only real essential — the right attitude.

Epic Travel Mistakes

Gone are the days when international travel was only a dream. Today, you can go anywhere in the world in the shortest time possible hassle free! While some things change, some things still remain the same like the part of being human and making mistakes. No matter how advanced we are technology-wise, there are still so many ways you can mess up when going on holidays. Here are some of the most common EPIC mistakes that people make when travelling.

Overpacking and then paying fees for excess baggage. This is something that can be easily avoided with a little bit of forethought and a lot of common sense. To avoid this, make sure that you know how much the airlines will allow you to carry and weight your bags before going to the airport. Remember that excess baggage is not one of the things that you plan for when planning your holiday so keep your baggage within limits.

Forgetting to check the customs of the place that you are planning to visit? Many travellers forget about this and find themselves stuck in the middle of some festival or event. Worst scenario being the places you planned to visit is closed! When planning your holiday, always check and double check the local celebrations and make sure you keep this in mind.

Cultural shock is also something that when not planned, can cause unnecessary frustration. Keep in mind that although English is considered to be an international language, you shouldn’t expect everyone to speak it! Make sure you are aware what kind of customs and language you will be facing on your vacation in order to avoid disappointment.

Not planning for a long flight is another seemingly ‘unimportant’ thing but can cause you a lot of unnecessary worries. Imagine having to sit for eight hours straight with no reading material or gadgets to keep you company- a nightmare!

Long flight (creative commons)

Wanting to do everything at once is another snare to be aware of. Although it is understandable that you want to make the most of your vacation, you do a lot of cramming in your life already so why do the same on your vacation? Plan your time wisely so that you aren’t left exhausted after your trip.

Forgetting to double check the visa requirements is another epic mistake. Usually, your passport needs to be valid for six months before you are issued a tourist visa so if you aren’t aware of this, you just might find yourself in trouble.

Provided you wisely plan your trip in advance, these mistakes are definitely not going to ruin your vacation.

Child-Free Zones

No less authoritative source than the BBC reports last month that the strangely anonymously named AirAsia-X will soon be introducing child-free seating.

These aren’t child-free flights, just zones reserved on AirAsia-X’s Airbus A330 flights between China, Australia and Japan for adults only. And I think it’s a superb idea whose time has come and the sooner it spreads to all airlines the better, because I’ve always secretly yearned for a way to identify the curmudgeonly misanthropes who inevitably compose a significant minority of any flight.

This has been tried before. Malaysia Air has banned children under 12 years old from the upper decks of its fleet of A380s. But the beauty of AirAsia-X’s approach is that it’s merely seven standard rows of seats, so it’ll be about as effective as the “non-smoking” section was back in the bizarro days when you could smoke on a plane. So the only practical effect will be tagging for avoidance the kind of parochial yokels who would pay extra to sit in the child-free zone. I suppose a side-effect will be that like minded people will be sat together so if they happen to breach their tiny, air-tight comfort zones long enough to hold a conversation they can confirm for each other that things were better in the old days and that you can’t even understand the lyrics.

I’ve been on flights with children and can confirm that babies cry, some toddlers don’t know to use their inside voices on a plane and until a certain age kicking the back of the seat in front of you is hours of unbridled entertainment. But I’ve also been on planes with fully-grown cranky provincials and I can confirm that very, very few of them are in any position to criticise anyone.

Anyone tempted to take advantage of the child-free seating section of a plane should take note that they’re being observed and will want to make very sure to not be fat nor flatulent nor rude to the stewardess. They should also be among the very first to have their overhead luggage stowed and if they recline their seat at any time during the flight or monopolize the toilets or the stewardess’ time then they need to know that they’ve outed themselves for the narcissistic stiffs that they are.

It comes down to this — if you can’t handle a crying child then you can’t handle the stresses of travel and you just shouldn’t do it. In fact, you should retreat from society altogether with its barking dogs and leaky headphones and broken mufflers and occasional wrong numbers. Or you can mellow out and accept that crying babies are part of the rich and complex tapestry that is living in modern society, as is the ability to fly.
