It’s actually very possible to spend some time in Rome without spending a fortune. If you are on your way to Italy, then Rome is a city that you just have to see. This is not just any city. This goes back a long way and we come back to it time and time again. In fact a couple of minutes away is the Vatican City, which is another country. Yes, it’s true!
There are some beautiful buildings and museums that you have to explore. The entrance fees are not all cheap, but you can save by buying a slice of pizza and eating in a beautiful setting, which is just as good as going to a five star restaurant. Make sure you also shop around for some budget friendly accommodation.
*Let’s start off with the Vatican City, but be warned that everyone has the same idea as you so this is something you have to book in advance for. Do this online before you go. If you wait in the queue you are going to be waiting for a very long time. This has got to be one of Rome’s main attractions so you won’t be disappointed. You may want to set aside a day for this. A lot of people enjoy coming here during the Easter period to hear the message or for the mass. The Vatican museums and the Sistine Chapel are what most people think of when you mention Rome so make this a priority. Seeing Michelangelo’s frescoes is a once in a lifetime experience.
*Some of the architecture can be appreciated just by walking around. This doesn’t cost you anything. The atmosphere is so good as well. The Trevi fountain, for example is such a pleasant surprise to find as you walk down another cobbled street and suddenly around the corner there you find a crowd gathered around this amazing masterpiece.
*The Colosseum is another place that you have to see. For some, it is enough to walk around the awesome structure. The Spanish steps also have to be admired. In the Summer it is great just to sit here to give your feet a rest and soak in the atmosphere, munching on a snack. Remember that the Summer months in June and July are extremely hot, especially in the City of Rome and a lot of shop owners close their stores.
*Although the Summer is hot and sticky, there is a vibrant atmosphere and on the river banks you will find a market where you will be able to pick up some bargains. The food and flower fair is always special and the Parthenon is not far away.
*The best way to experience Roman culture is to mingle with the Romans at one the local restaurants in the area. You won’t get this at any classy tourist restaurant. Find a pizzeria and you can be sure to be greeted by a couple of friendly Italians. Don’t forget to have a proper espresso at the end of your meal.
