Traveling by Cloud

I’m old enough to remember when travelling was mostly a massive exercise is personal security. I blame American Express, mainly, and their chillingly effective commercials depicting young honeymooners tearfully calling their parents after her purse had been artfully lifted from the back of a chair in an outdoor café, or befuddled senior citizens asking “what WILL we do?”

So naturally packing meant a solidly uncomfortable and, really, totally impractical money-belt with your traveler’s checks and tickets and passports and reservations and traveling meant stripping down and exposing your valuables whenever you went through security or boarded a train or had to pay for something.

ATM cards and just general experience have eliminated the stranglehold the evil geniuses at American Express held on the imagination and the traveler’s check is, thankfully, a thing of the past. Indeed, unless you’re making off with the proceeds of a jewel heist, there’s no reason to have a money-belt anymore at all. Whatever you might have been tempted to put in one has been replaced by the cloud:

ATMs and the Euro are the new currency traders

I still see those dead-eyed money changers at airports and train stations and I wonder who’s left to prey on. Who can still make it to an international airport with nothing but a wad of cash and no way to access their bank account in local currency? In fact no one, as far as I can tell, and by and large their tellers appear to be reduced to the role of ad-hoc information booth.
So don’t ever change your money. The trick is this; whenever you leave somewhere for a destination that uses a different currency than where you are are, be completely out of money. Take cash out of the ATM in small, safe amounts that you can afford to lose and you’re certain to spend or can donate to the World Wildlife Fund at your departure gate.
Incidentally the currency traders still have a revenue stream in their own ATMs. If it need be said, do not use them. Any ATM is going to charge you to access your own damn money but for the currency traders this is all they’ve got left and they can’t let go of the glory days when they had you at their mercy.

The cloud is the new tearful call home

Before you go, scan or photograph your passports, credit cards (just the front, if you’re concerned about hacking) and all your tickets and reservations and either email them to yourself or, even better, upload them to Google Drive or Microsoft Skydrive where you can access them from any computer with an internet connection (ie, any computer). By all means have printouts of whatever tickets or reservations are more convenient as hard-copies but above all know that nothing bad is going to happen. You can lose pretty much everything and so long as you can get online and to your bank or embassy you can get it all back again in 24 hours. The real objective here is not to travel physically lighter but psychically lighter.

E-Tickets are the new tickets-tickets

Just about all western travel can be done these days without issued reservations. There remain some archaic peculiarities, such as the very German train ticketing system in which a ticket entitles you, in practice, to buy a seat. But even these amusing cultural curiosities can be accommodated online and you can almost always select some variation of print-at-home.
I remember when I first encountered print-at-home tickets and being utterly perplexed: what was to prevent me from printing all the tickets I wanted and inviting my friends for unlimited free travel? Of course, apart from the fact that each ticket has a unique and irreproducible code and a scannable motif — usually a QR code — I just wouldn’t do that and neither would most people. This is the evolution in thinking that facilitated e-tickets — the realization that the comfort and convenience of the vast majority of passengers was a more important objective than catching the few cheats.
Refer above to the cloud. By all means print your tickets but don’t have a regularly-scheduled freak-out when you forget where you put them because it doesn’t matter any more — you can print them again or, as often as not, just show the conductor the confirmation on your phone.
Airline e-ticketing tends be even more convenient these days and self check in should be nominated for some sort of Nobel prize. Typically you arrive at the airport (as usual, way, way earlier than you should need to — security theatre has only gotten worse) and scan your passport through a machine which offers you seat selection and prints out your boarding pass. Self check in is such a sea change from the rote torture that, really, wasn’t that long ago that it can seem a little suspicious at first but it’s actually as simple and convenient as it seems.

Carrying a little less paper isn’t going to make your luggage much lighter but that’s always a secondary objective to enjoying where you are and the time spent getting there. So take a little weight off your mind, put it in the cloud, and it’ll follow you wherever you go.

A Quick Guide to Soma Bay, Egypt

Soma Bay, Egypt

On a small peninsula looking out over the pristine waters of the Red Sea is the exclusive Egyptian resort of Soma Bay. Featuring some of the best diving in the region, an 18-hole championship golf course, premium spas and seawater therapy centres, it’s gaining a reputation as a truly luxurious holiday destination – so let’s take a closer look at what this resort has to offer.

Location

Soma Bay can be found on the Red Sea Riviera, about 45km from Hurghada International Airport. It’s home to some of the Red Sea’s most spectacular sandy beaches and enjoys year-round sunshine, with temperatures generally ranging from 20 to 30 degrees C. The peninsula has been developed as a resort over the last 16 years by the Abu Soma Development Company.

The first hotel from the luxury Kempinski chain to be built in Egypt, it’s modelled on a Moorish fortress and features a private sandy beach, a dive centre and most famously its own system of swimming pools and lagoons spread out over seven kilometres.

Soma Bay

Diving

Soma Bay’s reef extends for several kilometres and is rich with a variety of marine life, including morays, crocodile fish, barracudas and thresher sharks. This makes it a particularly great location for diving and snorkelling activities: Panorama Reed and Abou Kafan are among the best spots to experience the underwater landscape, as well as the famous (or infamous) Salem Express Wreck.

Golf

Designed by South African champion Gary Player, the Cascades golf course at Soma Bay is one of the finest in Egypt. The 18-hole, par 72 course offers stunning views of green fairways amid the surrounding desert and the crystal-clear sea beyond. Adjacent is a nine-hole Golf Academy course that’s ideal for less experienced golfers, also designed by Gary Player.

Spas

The Red Sea’s thalassotherapy (sea water therapy) facilities are world-renowned, and Soma Bay has some great spas where you can receive all the massages, body scrubs and face rituals you desire! You can experience the health-giving properties of seawater and seaweed at Les Thermes Marins des Cascades, an extensive spa that can be found on the main resort complex.

FIve Things To See and Do in Faro

Igreja de Sao Francisco de Evora by Concierge.2C (creative commons)

If you love traveling and are doing a circuit in Europe and particularly a stopover in Portugal then perhaps you might consider 5 things to see and do in Faro. With a long standing history from as far as the thirteenth century, this city is considered as a very busy tourist attraction with many century old buildings some of which have marks of mediaeval disasters like earthquakes. Therefore, apart from the lovely climate during certain times of the year you have lots to look out for when you set foot in Faro. For an easy and convenient way to get around, consider Car Hire Faro Airport.

The Igreja de Sao Francisco

What catches your attention are the monumental buildings like the igreja de sao Francisco a magnificent church building that is a few centuries old and dedicated to the saint Francis of Assisi. The most captivating feature of this building is the strikingly beautiful baroque style used to construct this building. Also you cannot help but notice the tiles laid out artistically as a portrait of saint Francis of Assisi, which is one of the main tourist attractions and a must see when you visit this site.

Sao Bras de Alportal

If viewing sceneries are your style of recreation then you can get it at Sao Bras de Alportal where you get a very different environment away from the city and buildings. Here you have an expanse of nature with figs and almond plants adorning the scenery. Here you will have a personal taste of locally produced fig and almond products adding to that unforgettable experience that you will encounter while you are walking around. This adventure will leave you with that soft and crunchy taste of the almonds, and the sweet tasting figs.

Arco da Vila, Faro by Nol Aders (creative commons)

The Old Town

If you have something for the Moorish culture you will find it from the way the buildings have been designed. As you walk through the old town you will notice artifacts like handicraft rich in this culture to take away as souvenirs. The town itself has a very high tourist turnout from all walks of life. Tucked away in the streets are cafes that will offer you snacks and drinks as you carry on with your expedition.

The Arco da Vila

Perhaps on your way to the old town you notice the arco da vila a monumental gate having a bell tower and constructed with the most archaic designs that has stood strong for that long. The gateway also has a statue of saint Thomas Aquinas who was considered the city patron.

The Capela d’ Ossos

This is a site not for you if you are faint hearted. A weird piece of work you will notice having its walls plastered with bones and skulls of the dead. The chapel of bones was constructed in the sixteenth century by a monk who thought to carry on the Counter Reformation spirit at that time. The skulls and bones were meant to strengthen this concept of life being a transitory phase.

There may be lots of other places to visit and things to see but these are five of our favourites. For the deals in economy car hire don’t forget to book online before you travel.

Legendary Restaurants in Greece

Paros Photo by Eustaquio Santimano, Creative Commons

From the amazing beaches, the breath-taking islands, the exciting clubs, the narrow streets to the historic cities, everything about Greece is absolutely stupendous. However, most tourists would agree that there is more to Greece than the ivory sands, pristine waters and lovely souvenir shops. In fact, Greece would not be the same without its amazing food. Holidays to Greece would not be complete without enjoying a couple of meals at some traditional restaurants is a good reason to come back to this beautiful country some day in order to have a full Greek experience.

The “baklava” is a must-taste in this popular restaurant, among other mouth-watering sweets such as hanoum bourek, vezir parmak and malempi mastiha. Even though it serves only a few dishes and the menu is not as varied as expected, Kyria Eirini is a unique restaurant with a creative touch. Situated on the Folegandros Island, this little, quaint restaurant looks more like a mini market with a couple of nice tables and lovely decorations. All the ingredients used are fresh and the dishes are some of the most savoury in the area. The house specialities range from the outstanding homemade pasta, the delicious cheese pie, the fresh sea food and the mouth-watering rooster cooked in wine.

Situated in the delightful Athens, Paradosiako is less known among the tourists and mostly cherished by the locals in the area. The food is traditionally Greek, with a symphony of tasty meals ranging from meat dishes to scrumptious salads. Although it might be hard to spot this little taverna, it is worth the effort. Some of the most delicious dishes include the fresh seafood, which, although it is quite popular among the Greek restaurants, very few chefs know how to cook it well.

Superbly located in Mykonos, over viewing the Aegean Sea, Bill and Coo is an elegant restaurant, offering a stupendous ambiance as the guests have the opportunity to sit by the beautiful pool while serving a delicious meal, accompanied by a refined wine. Four Sure-Fire First Dates Around Europe

You’re young and you’re single and you’re in Europe. You’re answerable to no one and you’re at your peak and now’s the time for a summer romance. And when you’re travelling you have the unquantifiable advantage of romancing people you don’t know and may never see again and that should give you the courage to make an approach, introduce yourself with an assumed name and personality and even livelihood if you like, and ask out a stranger.

And now what? In your own element in your own country dating is enough of a nerve-testing ordeal, but the downside of visiting someplace new is that you’re visiting someplace new and you probably don’t know where to take a date for a guaranteed good time.

Whatever you were planning on doing as a lone tourist is probably suitable but just in case you think you’ve met the one and want the first date to be one of many then below are some sure-fire, low-budget, conversation-starting, romance-igniting evenings out in some of Europe’s most romantic capitals.

Paris. Midnight picnic on the Seine

For this night out to be a success you need a date, a bottle of wine (or two), one baguette, cheese, sausage and summer. In fact an umbrella and scarves and a positive attitude can spread this into Spring and Autumn. The key to this plan is that it’s not even a little bit unique and you just need to pick a spot and be friendly and you’ll be picnicking with like-minded individuals with all the advantages of a group date without actually needing to know anybody. When you’ve sufficiently impressed one another a private romantic walk along the Seine is exactly one step away. Quai des Grands Augustins is on the left bank of the Seine facing Ile de la Cité and, hence, Notre Dame. Of the various midnight picnic spots this has probably the best view and you’ll find a nice mix of young people following this very advice. Further East toward the Sorbonne you get a slightly denser and more local crowd of university students playing bongos and guitars and speaking mostly in French. Pont des Arts is very convivial and probably the most touristy but has the only slight drawback of thousands of padlocks woven into the railing by lovers observing this recent and, as of lately, rather annoying tradition of symbolically locking their love to the bridge and throwing the keys into the river. The rebel crowd climbs over the fence to drink wine and smoke drugs on the western point of Ile de la Cité which, as a municipal park, closes at 21:00.

800px-Quais_de_Seine

London. Pub comedy

You need to eat and you could probably stand a pint anyway so a pub is an ideal first date for a couple of strangers just arriving in London. First dates can be awkward, though, and the safer option might be to make sure there’s a distraction. And you’re in London, home of pub comedy, so that distraction might just as well be hilarious.
The Comedy Store off Leicester Square is probably the best pub comedy in London but it’s also the most polished, professional and pricey. Don’t go there on a first date. Go instead to the Comedy Café or the Lion’s Den or just look in Pub Comedy under Standup in Time Out magazine. Try to make a point of selecting something near where you’re staying and go on open-mic night for the friendliest atmosphere and by the end of the night you and your date will have at least one thing in common.

Milan. Buskers in Navigli

The sure-fire first date in Milan for tourists is the sure-fire any date for everyone in Milan – Navigli. Navigli is a residential quarter with a canal running through it and at night it’s lit up and festive and scenic in the way that only slightly run-down neighborhoods around dry canals can be when the sun goes down. An evening in Navigli can be a very economical date if you install yourself in one of the bars with outdoor seating (they all have outdoor seating) restrict yourself to wine or beer and the bruschetta and chips they give you as accompaniment to your drinks. That’s dinner and drinks sorted, now you just need a little light entertainment and your natural charms can do the rest.
And that’s where Navigli really comes through. Evenings by the canal are a non-stop parade of talented buskers, jugglers and, for some reason, fire-eaters. It’s a spectacle made all the more remarkable by how unexpected it is so I suggest bringing your date to Navigli for drinks as the sun is setting and acting all coy until the show starts.

Amsterdam. Free boat tour

Amsterdam is all about the water (and the drugs and prostitution but this is a FIRST date) and it’s easy to take a guided tour or hire your own boat and get lost. These options are expensive, though, and require maybe more commitment than a first date should and there’s little sexier than knowing a secret city-hack like a free boat tour. Behind the central station is a ferry dock that doesn’t offer so much free tours as an indispensable service to bicycle commuters who live on the other side of the river. But you don’t have to live on the other side of the river and you can go back and forth as you please and there are several routes lasting from ten to twenty minutes. The Buiksloterweg crossing lasts the longest and they all run with varying frequencies on a 24-hour schedule.

If your city’s not here or if the season’s wrong or some dark trauma from your childhood has rendered you incapable of enjoying pub comedy, remember the advice from above and just do whatever you were going to do if you hadn’t met this charming travel companion. There are also some generic guidelines that are almost guaranteed experiences in any city: a lot of museums have one night a week that they stay open late, a campus is never devoid of a group in which a charming couple of travelers would be welcome and if there’s a beach then just don’t forget to pack for a moonlit picnic.

Three Tips for Travel in Iceland

While Iceland may not be the hot spot for the tourist trade, many people want to see this wild country.  It is not overly populated, and the wilderness offers great sites such as the many glaciers as well as volcanoes which not many people are aware of.  So how does the novice Icelandic traveller know what to do when abroad?  The following are three tips for travel in Iceland:

Best Time to Travel

The best time to travel in Iceland is definitely in the summer because the weather is warmer and there are more daylight hours.  However, any time of the year can offer some fantastic sites, and hotels are open all of the year round.  There is no need to worry about animals that are in or out of hibernation as there are really no dangerous species in the country.  Some birds are a bit protective of their eggs and young so avoiding nests is the best way to circumvent them. Other than that though you will be fine in Iceland.

Is the Food Good?

There are many restaurants that serve up cuisines that can be found all around the world.  You can also find some that serve traditional Icelandic fare if you are feeling more adventurous.  Also look into the shops to find ingredients to come up with your meals if you rent a flat or home for your trip.  There is no need to worry, there is plenty of variety, and you will not go hungry.  And do not mind about the water there, it is very fresh and clear and unlike other parts of the world, the tap water tastes better than bottled. Tap water in Iceland is among the cleanest in the world. The locals also eat a lot of fish and fresh produce so the menus will not see you gaining extra holiday weight.

Cost of the holiday

It is a bit more expensive in Iceland than in other holiday spots but if you budget and rent your own jeep, you can save some money.  Remember that the roads are not well paved so you need to have a skilled driver on the trip.  Also, make sure to schedule a trip to one of the many spas as they are much more affordable than some of the other activities.  It is a great holiday to take with a group of people as opposed to on your own. It’s the type of holiday experience that can offer you memories for the rest of your life.Reykjavik Photo by- ezioman, Creative Commons

A trip to Iceland can be a wonderful way to spend a holiday, and it has a great deal of beauty to offer.  You can take a driving tour on your own or visit one of the many great spas.  You can go at any time of the year, but the summer is typically considered the best. Make sure to make the most out of your holiday to Iceland and don’t pay full price on your travels.
